Ever since the COVID-19 pandemic affected everyone globally, Instagram has been extremely focused on providing people with features and tools that they can use to support small businesses to get more Instagram followers. In mid-April, for instance, it launched the food delivery & gift card stickers. In addition, Facebook, the company that owns Instagram also launched the small business grants program in an effort to help small businesses keep running amid the pandemic. It is a well-received offer, as recently more people have been adopting insanely creative ways to get more followers.

Social Media Platform Instagram has its Own Way of Celebrating the Season of Giving

While everyone thought that the pandemic will only last a few months, they were proved wrong. And now, we will be celebrating the holidays locked down.

Due to the global COVID-19 pandemic, the holiday season will no doubt look different this year from how people have gathered with their family and friends in the years that passed. The social media platform Instagram followers are well aware of this fact. For this reason, it has thought of a way to show its users the spirit of giving despite the lockdown restrictions and fear of the deadly COVID-19 virus. Beginning in late November until December 1, Giving Tuesday, Instagram will feature a shared Giving Tuesday story at the front of the platform’s Stories bar. This aims to encourage people to support businesses directly on Instagram. In addition, the said move will make it easier to donate directly to a non-profit beneficiary within Feed.

Instagram is Highlighting the Acts of Generosity that People Show on the Platform

The Facebook-owned social media platform wants to amplify the acts of good in its app. Accounts that you follow who use the Donation or “I Donated” sticker on Stories will be added to a shared story at the front of your Stories bar for a limited time.

In addition to that, Instagram is also highlighting several creators who are helping in making a difference in their community, as well as those who are sharing tips about how one can give back. These acts of giving are not limited to donating something in kind. Rather, it could be volunteering, or making a kind gesture towards someone who is in need.

Below are the other ways that the social media platform is doing in order to show the spirit of giving:

1. A New Way to Support Non-Profits

According to Instagram, it will soon start testing a more permanent method for individuals to create and share fundraisers for non-profits within the posts on their Feed.

One of the social media platform’s efforts in supporting non-profit organizations is by providing them a Donate button. This button, along with the Instagram Donation sticker, helps non-profits in putting out calls to action in order to collect donations from social media users. In addition, Instagram users can also share the cause for their favorite charity.

However, it is important to note that there are a number of requirements that non-profits should follow before they could use the aforementioned feature. For instance, their Facebook account must be verified as a non-profit organization.

On the other hand, Instagram users who choose to use the Donate button to support a non-profit organization do not have to follow any requirements.

2. Supporting Small Businesses

In addition, to supporting non-profits, there are also several ways that you can do to show your love to your favorite small businesses on Instagram. For instance, you can encourage your followers to support small businesses by using the “Support Small Business” sticker.

With the new Support Small Business sticker, Instagram users can mention the small businesses that they love directly in that sticker. This will provide their followers with a preview of that business’s Instagram account. When people use the said sticker, their story will be added to a collaborative Instagram story. This way, their followers can see it as well as the other small businesses that people follow and support.

In addition, there are a lot of creators who heed Instagram’s call of making others feel the season of giving. For instance, @theconsciouskid  is using its platform in order to promote racial equity in terms of education.  @ohhappydani is raising money so it could create allyship artwork for educators across the United States. On the other hand, small businesses, such as @expeditionsubsahara is selling authentic African goods by African artists.
