Authors, to be very successful, will need to engage in some combination of several of the following activities: developing and leaning on a growing network of helpful connections, aggressively pursuing social media, being an active speaker, running targeted digital advertising campaigns, utilizing a seasoned book promoter to secure media coverage, and luck.
But what will authors need the most?
To develop the mindset of being a shameless marketer.
Before we proceed, answer me this:
· Are you a shy person?
· Do you think you are unworthy of attention?
· Do you feel uncomfortable talking about yourself?
· Do you not like to share your accomplishments with others?
To be a shameless marketer means you promote, every day, all of the time, regardless of your mood or sense of self-worth or quality of your book. Being confident is not optional — it is mandatory. Acting, talking, and living like an already successful author is how you must proceed.
Take these steps:
· Don’t apologize.
· Don’t ask for permission.
· Act like someone who is sharing a cure for cancer.
· Promote to your benefit.
· Know that you will help others by promoting yourself.
· Don’t brag — just share — and it will come off as sincere and genuine.
· Give facts, not bluster.
· Make it about the reader, not you.
Of course, success is not as simple as flipping a switch and embracing a new mindset, but it starts with that. Your attitude is the foundation that inspires and supports all of your actions. The rest will come to you once you open up to being a shameless book marketer.
