I’m interested in personality rebrands. It happens many times, to people we know and to famous people. Think about someone in your life who’s changed significantly over time, while remaining true to themselves. It’s amazing how human perceptions can transform.

In 2005, Tom Cruise was one of the world’ biggest action stars, starring in Steven Spielberg’s War of the Worlds remake that year. At the same time, he had hit a low in public perception. He was being scrutinized for his Scientology beliefs, his infamous Oprah couch jumping interview was one of YouTube’s earliest viral videos, while people shared stories about the creepy way his wife Katie Holmes was ‘selected’ for him. Many people thought he was crazy and disturbing personality all-round.

Today, Tom Cruise is beloved. People now regularly share stories of his awesome movie stunts, his love of normal things like curry, and his generosity.

How did he do it?
