Meta Makes Its AI Chatbot Available to All Users in India
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has announced the widespread availability of its Llama-3-powered AI chatbot in India. After months of testing during the general elections, Meta AI is now accessible to all users in the country through popular apps like WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Messenger, as well as via the meta.ai website. Initially, the chatbot will only support English.
Testing Phase and Launch
Meta began testing Meta AI in India in April, introducing it to a select group of users across various platforms. While the bot was rolled out in more than a dozen countries shortly after, India was not included in the initial release, likely due to the ongoing general elections at that time.
Now, with the elections concluded, Meta AI is fully integrated into the daily digital lives of Indian users, offering a variety of functionalities similar to other AI chatbots like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Google’s Gemini, and Anthropic’s Claude.
Features and Functionality
Meta AI can assist with a range of tasks, from suggesting recipes and planning workouts to helping write emails and summarizing texts. On Instagram, it can suggest Reels based on search queries, and on Facebook, users can interact with Meta AI directly from their feed for more insights related to specific posts. For instance, users can ask about the best places and times to see the northern lights if they come across a photo of the aurora borealis.

Additionally, Meta AI has image generation capabilities. Users can create images based on prompts, although past testing revealed some biases, such as adding turbans to images of Indian men and generating stereotypical old-school Indian houses. Meta has been updating its models to address these issues, though it remains unclear if these specific biases have been fully resolved.
Meta AI Across Platforms

On WhatsApp, users can chat with Meta AI individually or within group chats for assistance with planning trips, deciding on movies, or other group activities. However, Meta AI’s understanding is limited to the text used when it is mentioned or replied to within the group.
Meta AI is integrated into the Facebook feed, allowing users to ask questions about specific posts. This feature aims to provide deeper engagement and insights directly from the feed without navigating away from the app.
On Instagram, Meta AI can suggest Reels and generate images based on user prompts, enhancing the visual and interactive experience on the platform.
Messenger
Similar to its functionality on WhatsApp, Meta AI on Messenger can assist with a variety of tasks, from planning events to generating creative content.
Competition with Google’s Gemini
Meta’s rollout of its AI chatbot comes shortly after Google released its Gemini AI assistant in India, which supports nine local languages. This competitive timing underscores the race to capture a significant share of the AI assistant market, with companies like Microsoft and Apple also making strides with their AI integrations.
Meta AI aims to make daily tasks easier and more enjoyable for users. From planning events to solving complex problems, Meta AI provides versatile support. The tool’s integration across popular apps ensures users can benefit from AI assistance without leaving their preferred platforms.
Seems like Meta is committed to refining and improving Meta AI continuously. “This is a new technology, and it may not always return the response we intend. Since we launched, we’ve constantly released updates and improvements to our models, and we’re continuing to work on making them better,” a Meta spokesperson told TechCrunch.
As Meta AI starts rolling out in India, users can look forward to a smarter, faster, and more fun experience, all powered by Meta’s most advanced LLM, Llama 3.
