This past weekend, I took my family on a ski trip in Stratton, Vermont. Or, I should say they took me. My wife and two teens ski. I explore the lodge and local surroundings. I came across a lesson for authors. Let me explain.
I took a side trip to Manchester, VT, just a 25-minute ride down a beautiful mountain and into a cute town. A few art galleries, an indie bookstore, and several antique shops gave the town an intellectual feel.
However, the town is barely open for business.
The art museum closes at 3:00.
Starbucks closes at 230.
The bookstore cafe at 4:00.
Something is wrong with this picture.
Covid-induced worker shortage?
I asked the bookstore cafe why they close early, they said “Most people are no longer out by then.” I suggested with Starbucks closed, they could clean up with no competition. The minimum wage worker looked at me like I had two heads.
If you close early, people won’t be able to consume what you are selling. They will seek out competitors, home remedies, or get used to living without your product or service. This town is turning off its potential customers and expediting its demise.
Some of it might be the pandemic — fewer workers, fewer tourists — but I don’t know how true that is. The ski resort I stayed at looked packed. Those people — or their non-skiing friends and family — want to spend their time exploring the town. Too bad not all options stay open enough hours to exploit the opportunity presented to them.
Authors must learn from my little bitchfest on Manchester, Vermont. It is a tale of caution for authors who:
* Delay or deny the publication of their book. If you don’t publish it, no one can buy it.
* Don’t write a book that you outlined and planned to pen. If you don’t write a book, nothing gets published. How many people will buy a copy of an unpublished, unwritten book?
* Write and publish a book, buy fail to market it. If you don’t promote your book, no one will know about it.
Authors, don’t be like a small town in Vermont, closing the doors to opportunity.
