New Jersey and the greater Mid‑Atlantic region were hit by an unprecedented round of flash flooding on July 14–15, 2025, prompting emergency declarations, uprooting transport infrastructure, and sparking dramatic rescue efforts.

Torrential Rains Trigger New Jersey Flash Floods

A slow‑moving storm system drenched Northern and Central New Jersey with 4–7 inches of rain in just hours. Governor Phil Murphy declared a State of Emergency Monday evening, urging residents to shelter in place and avoid all non-essential travel.

Major highways—including stretches of the New Jersey Turnpike near Linden, I‑78 in Berkeley Heights, and Route 22 in Scotch Plains—became impassable. Flooded roadways stranded numerous vehicles, including 30 homes in North Plainfield alone, where emergency crews conducted multiple water rescues.

North Plainfield, especially the Netherwood section, became ground zero for flood disaster. With up to eight streets submerged, local officials evacuated dozens of trapped residents. Mayor Lawrence La Ronde confirmed at least 30 homes required rescue, with many evacuees sheltered at the recreation center.

Tragically, a home on Parkview Avenue exploded after floodwaters damaged a gas line. The inhabitants had safely evacuated beforehand, and no injuries were reported.

In addition to roadway chaos, subway systems in New York faced major setbacks. NYC’s No. 1, 2, 3, M and R lines experienced severe delays or suspensions due to platform flooding. On Monday night, New York City recorded the second highest hourly rainfall since 1943, dumping 2.07″ in under an hour.

Newark Liberty International Airport, along with JFK and LaGuardia, enforced ground stops, leading to more than 1,200 flight cancellations across the region .

    Emergency Response

With floodwaters beginning to recede late Monday and into Tuesday, emergency services remain on high alert. Union County’s flash flood watches have begun to expire, but officials warn of lingering road hazards.

Utilities in New Jersey reported a few hundred scattered power outages for JCP&L and PSE&G—though thankfully no major blackouts were confirmed.

Experts warn this weather event is symptomatic of a broader trend. Increasing climate change-driven extreme precipitation is resulting in flash floods becoming more frequent and intense.

Rainfall wasn’t limited to New Jersey—Northern New York, Pennsylvania, Connecticut, Maryland, and Virginia all issued flash flood warnings, with some areas receiving over 7 inches of rain, straining infrastructure across the I‑95 corridor.

What Residents Should Know Right Now

    • Evacuate wisely: Seek higher ground if water enters your home. North Plainfield provided shelters for evacuees.

    • Avoid travel: Roadways, especially in Scotch Plains, Linden, and New Providence, remain hazardous. Travel remains advised only for urgent matters.

    • Watch for aftereffects: Floodwaters may compromise roads and gas lines (as seen in North Plainfield explosion).

    • Prepare for more storms: Another weather system could push through Wednesday through the weekend, bringing renewed heavy rain.

New Jersey’s flash flooding crisis from July 14–15, 2025, stands as a stark example of nature’s unpredictability, urban vulnerability, and the immediate dangers posed by climate volatility. With state-wide emergency measures in effect, floodwaters beginning to ease, and infrastructure under recovery, the focus now turns to long-term resilience—upgrading drainage systems, enhancing emergency readiness, and preparing communities for increasingly frequent extreme weather events.

Residents are encouraged to closely monitor updates from Gov. Murphy, their local emergency agencies, and the National Weather Service, and to value safety above all.
