Thousands of fans gathered in Birmingham today to pay their respects to Ozzy Osbourne, the legendary Black Sabbath frontman who passed away at the age of 76. The city, known as the birthplace of heavy metal, hosted a public funeral procession that allowed fans to say their final goodbyes before a private family service.

A City Comes Together For Ozzy Osbourne Funeral

Born John Michael Osbourne on December 3, 1948, in Birmingham, Osbourne rose to fame as the lead vocalist of Black Sabbath, pioneering the heavy metal genre. His distinctive voice and theatrical stage presence made him a beloved figure in the music world. Beyond his musical achievements, Osbourne’s candidness about his personal struggles and his resilience endeared him to fans globally.

Sharon Osbourne, Ozzy’s wife, was visibly emotional as she stood beside their children, Jack and Kelly, during the procession. The family laid flowers at the Black Sabbath bench, a tribute to the band’s legacy and their father’s impact on the music world.

The procession began at 1 p.m. BST, with a hearse carrying Osbourne’s coffin adorned with purple flowers spelling out his name. The cortege made its way down Broad Street, passing landmarks significant to Osbourne’s life and career, including the Black Sabbath Bridge and bench, where fans had left tributes and floral arrangements. The procession was accompanied by a brass band performing Black Sabbath hits, adding to the emotional atmosphere.

Tribute to the ‘Prince of Darkness’

Fans from around the world lined the streets to honour Osbourne. Many wore Black Sabbath merchandise and held signs bearing messages of love and respect. The crowd chanted “Ozzy, Ozzy” as the hearse passed, a testament to the deep connection between the artist and his fans.

For those unable to attend in person, a live stream of the procession was made available, allowing fans worldwide to participate in the tribute.

Following the public procession, a private funeral service was held for Osbourne’s family and close friends. The service took place at a location in Gerrards Cross, where invited guests, including Elton John, Black Sabbath bandmates Tony Iommi, Bill Ward, and Geezer Butler, and Metallica’s James Hetfield, gathered to celebrate Osbourne’s life and legacy. Yungblud delivered a reading during the service, reflecting the younger generation’s admiration for the rock icon.

In addition to the public procession, the city of Birmingham recently honored Osbourne with the Freedom of the City award. A retrospective exhibit, “Ozzy Osbourne: Working Class Hero,” featuring band memorabilia and personal artifacts, opened at the Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery earlier in July. A mural by Mr. Murals outside New Street station was also signed by the original members of Black Sabbath shortly before their farewell concert.

    Remembering Ozzy Osbourne

Ozzy Osbourne’s farewell procession in Birmingham offered a powerful, emotional tribute reflecting both his personal legacy and the city’s collective mourning. With family, old bandmates, and tens of thousands of fans in attendance, the day exemplified how one man’s music and roots can unite a community in shared remembrance. Though the funeral will close with a private ceremony, the public procession honored the legend in true rock‑star fashion—celebratory, poignant, and deeply grounded in Birmingham pride.

As the city of Birmingham bids farewell to one of its most iconic sons, the legacy of Ozzy Osbourne continues to inspire generations of music lovers.

The public funeral procession for Ozzy Osbourne in Birmingham was a poignant tribute to the rock legend. Fans and family came together to honour his life and legacy, celebrating his contributions to music and his deep connection with his hometown. The event underscored the enduring impact of Osbourne’s artistry and the love he inspired in those who admired him.
