President Donald Trump has officially declared February 9, 2025, as Gulf of America Day. The proclamation, signed aboard Air Force One while flying over the renamed body of water formerly known as the Gulf of Mexico, has stirred both celebration and controversy. As Trump headed to New Orleans to attend Super Bowl LIX, his announcement added an unexpected twist to the day’s festivities.

What Is Gulf of America Day?

Gulf of America Day is a commemorative day declared by President Trump, designed to celebrate the historical and economic importance of this vital waterway. In his proclamation, Trump urged public officials and citizens to observe the day with appropriate programs, ceremonies, and activities. However, despite its official recognition by the White House, questions remain regarding its status.

Is Gulf of America Day a Federal Holiday?

A common question arising from the proclamation is, “Is Gulf of America Day a federal holiday?” The answer is no. Although President Trump has designated February 9 as Gulf of America Day, it does not carry the benefits or legal status of a federal holiday. Instead, it serves as a symbolic observance intended to foster national pride and encourage local events that highlight the region’s contributions to America’s growth.

A New Name for an Iconic Waterway

Under Executive Order 14172, titled “Restoring Names That Honor American Greatness,” Trump ordered the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America. This decision was part of a broader initiative aimed at restoring names that, in his view, better reflect America’s heritage and contributions to global commerce. The order directs the Secretary of the Interior to update all official federal maps, signage, and documents to reflect the new name within 30 days.

Historically, the area was once known as the “Mexican Bay” (Seno Mexicano) until early 19th-century explorers renamed it based on the extensive Mexican coastline. Trump’s renaming effort aims to reclaim what he sees as an integral asset to the nation’s growth. Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum has already indicated that major map providers like Apple and Google will begin updating their databases to display the new name for U.S. users.

    Trump’s Proclamation and Its Significance

While en route to the Super Bowl, Trump signed the proclamation aboard Air Force One, an act that added drama to his journey and ensured widespread media coverage. “I, Donald J. Trump, President of the United States, do hereby proclaim February 9, 2025, as Gulf of America Day,” the document reads. This move not only reinforces his commitment to what he calls “American greatness” but also fits into his broader agenda of renaming landmarks—such as the restoration of Mount McKinley’s former name.

The president emphasized that the change was made to honor America’s past and to signal a new chapter in national pride. He called upon public officials to observe the day with events and activities, a request that many hope will spur community celebrations along the Gulf Coast.

    Mixed Reactions and Push Back

The renaming has ignited mixed reactions both domestically and internationally. Supporters laud the decision as a reclaiming of American heritage, highlighting the region’s crucial role in early American trade and economic development. They argue that the new name, Gulf of America, better reflects the historical significance and future potential of the area.

Critics, however, question the necessity and timing of the renaming. They point out that the Gulf of Mexico has been a well-established geographical term for centuries and argue that changing it may create confusion, especially among international audiences. In Mexico and other countries, the old name will likely persist on maps, leading to a dual nomenclature that could complicate diplomatic and economic relationships.

Furthermore, some political observers see this move as part of a broader strategy by Trump to emphasize American identity amid a period of geopolitical tension. The declaration, made during a high-profile event like the Super Bowl, ensures that the proclamation receives maximum attention and reinforces Trump’s image as a leader dedicated to reviving American pride.

In the coming weeks, communities along the Gulf’s coast may organize local events, ceremonies, or educational programs to mark the day. Whether one views it as a symbolic reclaiming of American heritage or a controversial political maneuver, Gulf of America Day is sure to spark debate and reflection on the evolving identity of American geography.
