Paramount Pictures is moving forward with a film adaptation of the popular video game “Cyberpunk 2077,” Variety has confirmed. The project brings together the studio and CD Projekt Red, the developer behind the original game, to translate the dystopian sci-fi world to the big screen.
Lorenzo di Bonaventura, known for producing the “Transformers” franchise, is attached to produce the film. CD Projekt Red will also serve as a producer on the project, ensuring the studio maintains creative oversight of the adaptation. This marks a significant step in Paramount’s strategy to capitalize on the growing market for video game adaptations.
Targeting Adult Audiences
The decision to adapt “Cyberpunk 2077” aligns with Paramount’s broader strategy to target older demographics. While recent successful video game films like “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” and “Five Nights at Freddy’s” have drawn younger crowds, the studio is looking to capture the “big kids” market with this project. The mature themes and complex narrative of the game provide a distinct contrast to family-friendly adaptations.
Paramount is already positioning itself in this space with other upcoming projects. The studio has “Call of Duty” in development, directed by Peter Berg with a screenplay by Taylor Sheridan. Additionally, the “Street Fighter” film is scheduled for release on October 16. These projects collectively signal a shift in how major studios approach interactive media properties.

Game Success and Legacy
The source material for the film has proven to be a commercial powerhouse despite a rocky launch. “Cyberpunk 2077” was released in December 2020 after multiple delays. The initial release was marred by widespread technical issues on older console generations, but the game eventually recovered and achieved significant sales milestones.
According to industry reports, the game has sold 40 million copies worldwide. Its major expansion, “Cyberpunk 2077: Phantom Liberty,” has added another 15 million copies to that total. The game is set in Night City, a neon-lit metropolis where players assume the role of V, a mercenary who becomes entangled with the digital ghost of rock star Johnny Silverhand, portrayed by Keanu Reeves in the game.
The narrative follows V and Johnny as they attempt to separate their consciousnesses while fighting against Arasaka, a powerful megacorporation that controls the city. This rich lore and established fanbase provide a strong foundation for a cinematic adaptation. The transition from interactive entertainment to film has become a lucrative trend in Hollywood, with video game adaptations now considered major box office contenders rather than risky ventures.
