Replit CEO and co-founder Amjad Masad presented a vision of the modern workplace at TechCrunch Disrupt in San Francisco, describing a shift toward what he calls the self-driving company. This concept does not refer to autonomous vehicles, but rather to an organizational structure where AI agents perform the majority of routine operational tasks.

Masad, who has observed the rapid adoption of AI coding tools across industries, argued that the nature of work is undergoing a fundamental transformation. He noted that while many workers are already experiencing these changes, a significant portion of the global workforce remains unaware of the impending shift.

“The reality is, all of our jobs changed over the past year,” Masad told the audience. “But a big part of America and the world, they still don’t know that that change is coming, and it’s going to be surprising to a lot of people.”

    Automated Triage and Human Judgment

Replit has implemented this model internally since AI agents became more reliable earlier this year. The company reports that its operations have fundamentally changed, with agents driving much of the daily workflow. Masad used the company’s customer support system as a primary example of this new dynamic.

When a support ticket arrives, an AI agent immediately examines the request. It cross-references GitHub issues, reviews the relevant codebase, and checks Linear tickets for context. By the time a human support engineer reviews the issue, the agent has already compiled all necessary background information.

This process allows the human employee to focus on decision-making rather than data gathering. If the engineer determines that a code patch is required, they can deploy it with a single click, triggering another agent to handle the deployment process.

Masad emphasized that this loop relies on human oversight. “You have an entire loop where agents did most of the work, but crucially, there’s human judgment in the middle, and we don’t think that’s going away anytime soon,” he said. He argued that taste and judgment remain uniquely human traits that AI cannot replicate.

Shifting Focus to Architecture and Strategy

The introduction of AI agents at Replit has altered how employees spend their time. Rather than replacing staff, the technology has shifted their focus from execution to strategy. Masad observed that his team now spends more time discussing architecture and planning how to build systems.

Internal meetings have become more focused on whiteboarding and high-level design. The reduction in mundane tasks has allowed engineers to engage in more creative problem-solving. Masad stated that Replit’s conversations with other businesses often center on how AI can make work less boring and more creative.

“We’re spending a lot more time figuring out what to work on,” Masad explained. “I go around the company, I see a lot more discussions, a lot more whiteboarding. We spend a lot more time on architecture, how to build things.”

He suggested that this model offers a positive alternative to the fear often associated with automation. Instead of viewing AI as a threat to employment, Masad proposed seeing it as a tool that elevates human contribution by removing repetitive labor.

“There’s a positive vision of the world that Silicon Valley is not really putting out, and we’re hoping to do that,” he added. Replit continues to refine its AI coding tools, aiming to demonstrate how this self-driving company structure can improve productivity and employee satisfaction.
