Singapore Airlines is expanding its Australian network by launching a new daily service to Western Sydney Airport (WSI). The carrier will begin operating the route on November 23, just days after the airport officially opens to commercial passenger traffic. This move establishes Singapore Airlines as the first international airline to commit to the new hub.

New Route Details and Aircraft Configuration

The new service, designated SQ261 and SQ262, will operate using the airline’s 303-seat Airbus A350-900. The flight covers a distance of 3,886 miles (6,254 km) between Singapore Changi Airport and the new Sydney facility. The block time is scheduled at seven hours and 50 minutes for the outbound journey from Singapore, with the return trip taking eight hours and ten minutes.

The A350-900 configuration for this route includes 40 business class seats and 263 economy class seats. The aircraft does not feature a premium economy cabin. This specific widebody aircraft will be the first of its kind to serve Western Sydney Airport with passenger flights, joining earlier narrowbody services from carriers like Jetstar and Air New Zealand.

    Strategic Expansion in Australia

The addition of the Western Sydney Airport route significantly increases Singapore Airlines’ presence in the region. According to schedule data from aviation analytics firm Cirium, the airline will operate 149 weekly departures to Australia in the week of November 23. This represents an increase from 140 weekly flights during the same period last year. The new route adds seven weekly departures to the network.

Australia remains the largest market for Singapore Airlines by weekly departures. The airline’s schedule to Australia will now match its busiest route to Melbourne, which also sees 35 weekly departures. Other key Australian destinations include Brisbane, Perth, and Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport, each receiving four daily round trips. Adelaide has also seen an increase of two weekly flights since last year.

The new service complements the airline’s existing four daily flights to Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport. This brings the total number of daily services to the greater Sydney area to five. The expansion underscores the carrier’s focus on the Australian market, which leads its top ten destinations ahead of Indonesia, China, and India.

Operational Advantages of Western Sydney Airport

Western Sydney Airport offers operational flexibility that differs from the existing Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport. The new facility is certified to handle 24-hour operations, whereas Kingsford Smith enforces a curfew from 11:00 PM to 6:00 AM. This allows Singapore Airlines to schedule SQ262 to depart just before midnight, facilitating connections with morning flights from Changi. In contrast, the airline’s latest departure from Kingsford Smith leaves at 7:10 PM.

Western Sydney Airport is located 27 miles (44 km) from Sydney’s central business district, a considerable distance compared to the 5 miles (8 km) for Kingsford Smith. The airport opened for cargo flights in July and is set to welcome its first passengers on October 25 with Jetstar flights to the Gold Coast. Air New Zealand will follow with the first international service to Auckland starting October 26.

Despite the optimistic goal of handling over 8 million passengers annually by 2030, current flight schedules for the next 12 months remain limited. QantasLink is scheduled to begin operations at the airport in March 2027. The launch of the Singapore Airlines route marks a significant step in the airport’s development as a major regional hub.
