Biographer Walter Isaacson is turning his attention to the creators of artificial intelligence with a new podcast series titled The Builders with Walter Isaacson. The show features interviews with prominent figures in the tech industry, including OpenAI co-founder Elon Musk, Palantir co-founder Peter Thiel, and Anthropic co-founders Dario and Daniela Amodei.
Isaacson, known for his biographies of Steve Jobs and Elon Musk, described the project as a way to engage with the rapid evolution of AI in a more timely format than a book. He stated that AI is the most transformative technology since the advent of electricity 130 years ago. The podcast aims to provide deep dives into the minds of those building the technology, addressing both the enormous opportunities and the significant dangers it presents.

The Builders with Walter Isaacson Launch Details
Kaleidoscope is launching the show in partnership with Ramp, with distribution handled by iHeartPodcasts. The first episode, featuring Elon Musk, is scheduled to release on October 20. The series will continue with new episodes twice weekly through January, with Isaacson continuing to record interviews throughout the fall.
The guest list also includes Fei-Fei Li, often referred to as the Godmother of AI, Palantir CEO Alex Karp, and Oculus VR creator Palmer Luckey. Isaacson noted that he intends to continue writing biographies alongside producing future podcasts, maintaining his focus on connecting the accomplishments of innovators with their personal character.
Musk, Thiel and the Risks of Autonomous Agents
Isaacson plans to challenge guests on the development of autonomous agents, questioning why companies are building systems they cannot fully control. He highlighted concerns from figures like Dario and Daniela Amodei, as well as Musk, who view these developments as potential dangers requiring guardrails, regulation, or even a pause. Despite these individual qualms, Isaacson observed that the competitive environment makes it difficult for any single entity to unilaterally disarm.

The biographer also reflected on his long history with Elon Musk. Since the publication of his 2023 biography, Musk has faced increased backlash for political and racial comments made online. Isaacson stated that the Musk seen in the book is the same Musk seen today, prone to what he called “demon mode” and dark conspiratorial views, which he attributes to spending too much time on the social media platform X.
Isaacson found Peter Thiel particularly interesting to interview, noting how Thiel has been demonized while simultaneously pushing technology forward. He suggested that the polarizing nature of these tech leaders is reflected in the technologies they create, which can be both brilliant and divisive when they intersect with the real world.

Isaacson argued for a return to the philosophy of Steve Jobs, who viewed computers as a bicycle for the mind that augments human imagination rather than replacing it. He contrasted this with the current trend of creating agentic autonomous agents, which he believes moves away from the tradition of tight symbiosis between humans and machines. He emphasized the need to ensure that technology serves humanity rather than operating independently of human control.
