Tragic Loss for Morgan Academy: Caden Tellier’s Passing

The Alabama high school football community is mourning the loss of Caden Tellier, a 16-year-old quarterback from Morgan Academy in Selma, Alabama. Tellier passed away on Saturday, a day after suffering a severe brain injury during a football game against Southern Academy. The tragic incident occurred in the third quarter of Morgan Academy’s season opener, marking a heartbreaking start to what should have been a promising season for the young athlete.

    A Tackle That Changed Everything

Caden Tellier, a junior at Morgan Academy, was critically injured while making a tackle in the third quarter of the game. Witnesses reported that the injury seemed to occur as part of a routine play. However, it quickly became apparent that Tellier’s condition was serious. He was airlifted to the University of Alabama Birmingham Hospital in critical condition but sadly succumbed to his injuries the following day. The Alabama Independent School Association (AISA) Executive Director, Michael McLendon, confirmed the tragic news, expressing deep sorrow on behalf of the association and urging the community to offer support and prayers for Tellier’s family.

    Community In Grievance

The news of Tellier’s death has deeply affected the Morgan Academy community. Dr. Bryan Oliver, the headmaster of Morgan Academy, shared an emotional statement on social media.

“It is with a heavy heart that I must inform you that Caden Tellier has gone to be with his Lord and Savior. Caden loved the Lord with all his heart and was a shining light every day he graced the halls of Morgan Academy. He was a student, a friend, an athlete and most important a Christ follower.

There are no words to describe how we feel as a school community and family. We will come together and support Jamie, Arsella and Lyla with our whole hearts. We offer our deepest sympathy to the Tellier’s extended family as well.

I want to thank all the schools and individuals that have reached out during this difficult time. Caden will never be forgotten for who he was and what he means to Morgan Academy.”

Dr. Bryan Oliver, Headmaster of Morgan Academy.

The Tellier family also released a heartfelt message: “Our boy, Caden Tellier, has met Jesus face to face. Everyone who knows Caden has known kindness, generosity, and love, and true to his nature, he is giving of himself one more time. Lives have been touched by the way he lived, and now lives will be saved through his passing.” This statement underscores Caden’s decision to be an organ donor, a final act of generosity that will help others even in his absence.

In the wake of this tragedy, Morgan Academy has suspended all school activities for the week to allow students, staff, and the community to grieve. “As a small school, Morgan Academy feels this tragedy even more deeply,” McLendon noted. The tight-knit community has rallied together to support Caden’s parents, Jamie and Arsella, and his sister, Lyla, as they navigate this painful time.

The school’s football team, the Morgan Academy Senators, won the game against Southern Academy 30-22, with Tellier contributing significantly before his injury. However, the victory has been overshadowed by the loss of a beloved student and athlete. Tellier was known not only for his athletic skills but also for his character, kindness, and leadership on and off the field.

This tragedy has struck a chord across Alabama, a state where high school football is more than just a sport; it’s a community institution. The incident has brought attention to the risks involved in contact sports and has spurred conversations about safety measures in high school athletics. Morgan Academy, along with other schools in the AISA, is reviewing protocols to ensure the safety of all student-athletes moving forward.

Remembering Caden Tellier: A Life of Kindness and Courage

Caden Tellier’s passing is a profound loss not only for his family and Morgan Academy but also for the entire Alabama high school sports community. He is remembered as a talented athlete, a dedicated student, and a young man of faith and kindness. His legacy will continue to inspire those who knew him, and his final act of organ donation will save and transform lives, a testament to the character he exhibited throughout his short life.

As Morgan Academy and the Alabama community continue to mourn, they also celebrate the life of a young man who touched many hearts and will be remembered for his spirit, generosity, and love for others.
