    Where Is Blatten, Switzerland?

Blatten is a picturesque village situated at 1,540 meters above sea level in the Lötschental Valley, within the canton of Valais, Switzerland. Known for its traditional sun-darkened wooden houses and proximity to the Jungfrau-Aletsch UNESCO World Heritage Site, Blatten is the highest inhabited settlement in the valley. The village, with a population of approximately 300 residents, is renowned for its unspoiled natural beauty and rich cultural heritage.

Swiss Glacier Collapse Devastates Village of Blatten

On May 28, 2025, a massive portion of the Birch Glacier collapsed, triggering a devastating landslide that buried about 90% of the village of Blatten under ice, rock, and mud. The collapse released approximately 3 million cubic meters of debris, equivalent to a 3.1-magnitude earthquake. Fortunately, due to prior warnings from geologists, the village’s residents had been evacuated on May 19, potentially saving many lives. However, a 64-year-old man remains missing, prompting ongoing search efforts by emergency services.

Environmental Factors of the Blatten Landslide

Experts suggest that the collapse was likely influenced by a combination of factors, including the destabilization of permafrost and the accumulation of overlying rocks on the glacier. High-altitude snowmelt may have also contributed to the glacier’s failure. While some scientists caution that more data is needed to determine the exact cause, the incident underscores the broader impact of climate change on Alpine regions. Switzerland’s glaciers have experienced a significant decline, losing 10% of their volume between 2022 and 2023 alone.

    The Aftermath in Blatten, Switzerland

The landslide not only destroyed much of Blatten but also blocked the Lonza River, creating a natural dam and forming a swelling lake that threatens further flooding. Emergency response teams, including drone surveillance and specialized rescue personnel, have been deployed to manage the crisis and search for the missing individual. Authorities have also increased the capacity of a downstream dam and evacuated nearby villages as a precautionary measure.

    Aid Response

Blatten’s mayor, Matthias Bellwald, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the village but emphasized the community’s resilience and determination to rebuild. Swiss President Karin Keller-Sutter conveyed solidarity with the affected residents, highlighting the need for national support in recovery efforts. The disaster serves as a stark reminder of the vulnerabilities faced by mountain communities in the face of climate-induced natural hazards.
