Bath & Body Works Snowed In Controversial Design

Bath & Body Works recently found itself at the center of controversy after releasing a winter-themed candle called “Snowed In.” The candle’s label, featuring a stylized paper snowflake design, sparked outrage online as many critics claimed the design resembled the hoods worn by members of the Ku Klux Klan (KKK). Social media users and commenters on platforms like Reddit and X quickly dubbed the candle the “Klandle” or “Klan Krismas Kandle,” which amplified the backlash.

The snowflake design was intended to evoke a simple winter aesthetic, but the conical shapes and two small cutouts near the center of the image led many to draw comparisons to KKK hoods, a widely recognized hate symbol. The Ku Klux Klan is one of the oldest and most infamous white supremacist groups in the United States, known for its violent and racist agenda against Black Americans and other marginalized communities.

Bath & Body Works’ Response and Apology

In response to the backlash, Bath & Body Works quickly issued an apology and pulled the “Snowed In” candle from both its online store and physical retail locations. The company emphasized that the design was unintentional and reiterated its commitment to addressing the concerns of both employees and customers. In a statement, a Bath & Body Works spokesperson said:

“We apologize to anyone we’ve offended and are swiftly working to have this item removed and are evaluating our process going forward.”

The company’s decision to act swiftly was likely influenced by the fact that the holiday season is a crucial period for Bath & Body Works. With nearly 40% of its annual sales coming from seasonal products like holiday candles, this controversy threatened to disrupt its financial performance during a vital sales quarter.

KKK Candle Bath & Body Works: Online Resale and Aftermath

Although the candle has been removed from Bath & Body Works’ stores, some people who purchased the “Snowed In” candle before it was pulled have turned to online resale platforms like eBay. Listings for the candle have appeared with prices ranging from $125 to as high as $360. Despite the controversy, the candle’s presence on resale platforms remains, although eBay has issued a statement clarifying that any listings using explicitly racist language would be banned.

    Social Media Reactions and Criticism

The Bath & Body Works Snowed In candle’s design sparked a wave of criticism across social media, with many users expressing disbelief that such a product made it through the company’s design and review process. One Reddit user pointed out, “Out of all the ‘paper snowflake’ designs to go with, they go with this one? I’ve made a lot of paper snowflakes as a kid, and none of them ever had two eye holes in the point.” Other users questioned whether anyone at Bath & Body Works reviewed the design before approving it for production.

KKK Candle Bath & Body Works label design has also been heavily debated on various social media platforms.

Some social media users went even further, calling for accountability within the company. On X, one person remarked, “I want to know who came up with that concept and have they been fired… highly offensive.”

    Hate Symbols and the KKK

The controversy surrounding the Bath & Body Works Snowed In candle highlights the sensitivity around imagery linked to the KKK. According to the Anti-Defamation League, the image of a hooded Klansman remains a potent hate symbol, frequently used by white supremacists across the world. The Southern Poverty Law Center similarly identifies the KKK as one of the most notorious hate groups in American history, having been formed in 1865 to terrorize Black Americans and uphold racist ideologies.

With hate crimes against Black Americans accounting for 30% of incidents in the U.S. last year, according to an FBI report, this issue remains highly relevant today. The resurgence of symbols linked to hate groups like the KKK only intensifies the public’s sensitivity to products or designs that may unintentionally evoke these harmful associations.

Impact on Bath & Body Works Candle and Image

Bath & Body Works has committed to evaluating its design process to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future. The retailer has acknowledged the mistake and is taking steps to ensure greater oversight in product development. While the controversy over the Bath & Body Works Snowed In candle has cast a shadow over the company’s holiday season rollout, its swift response and transparency may help repair the damage.

The incident serves as a reminder of the importance of cultural sensitivity in product design, especially in a diverse marketplace where the potential for unintentional harm can have significant consequences. Whether Bath & Body Works can recover from this misstep remains to be seen, but the company has clearly taken the initial steps to address the concerns of its customers and broader public.

The Bath & Body Works Snowed In candle incident underscores the importance of vigilance and cultural awareness in product design. As the company works to rebuild trust, it must ensure that its products reflect not just seasonal cheer but a respect for all its customers, free from the potential for harmful and offensive associations.
