The United States has abruptly redeployed its B-1 bomber fleet from the Royal Air Force (RAF) base in Fairford, citing security concerns. The decision follows a series of arrests in the UK involving suspects accused of plotting attacks against the military installation.

Roughly a dozen aircraft were stationed at the base in Gloucestershire before the sudden departure. A Pentagon spokesperson confirmed the movement to Reuters, stating that all bombers have returned to their home stations in the United States. The spokesperson noted that operational security prevented real-time confirmation of the asset movements.

    Security Concerns at RAF Fairford

The withdrawal comes as the US and Israel continue military operations against Iran, a conflict that began in late February. RAF Fairford, located approximately 100 miles west of London, has served as a key staging point for US bombers participating in the campaign.

British authorities recently disrupted several alleged plots targeting the base. On September 27, police arrested five men on suspicion of planning to plant explosives near the airfield. Investigators found petrol in the suspects’ vehicles but no explosive devices. The men were released without charge the following day, though they remain under investigation.

Further compounding security fears, a 25-year-old dual UK-Iranian national was arrested in London on Thursday. He faces suspicion of plotting an attack against the airbase. UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham suggested last week that Iran played a role in the alleged schemes, although he provided no specific evidence.

    Diplomatic Tensions and US Response

The arrests have strained diplomatic relations between Tehran and London. Iran summoned the UK ambassador to protest the detentions. Iranian officials have denied any involvement in plots against the British base.

US President Donald Trump praised the UK authorities for their handling of the situation. He described the arrests as a “fantastic” effort and stated that US intelligence had been monitoring the suspects for an extended period. Trump accused the men of seeking to cause significant damage to US facilities.

Vicki Evans, the Senior National Coordinator for Counter Terrorism Policing, described the investigation as “hugely complex.” She confirmed that police are examining all possible angles, including potential foreign state involvement. The UK government has largely resisted pressure from the Trump administration to join the war against Iran, though it granted the US defensive access to bases like Fairford and Diego Garcia in March.

RAF Fairford has a long history with US military operations, dating back to the Gulf War in the 1990s. The base has previously been the site of antiwar protests, including a 2003 incident where demonstrators breached the perimeter to damage equipment intended for the Iraq invasion. The current redeployment marks a significant shift in the base’s operational status amid heightened regional tensions.
