American Airlines has announced plans to resume nonstop flights between New York’s John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) and Seattle-Tacoma International Airport (SEA). The carrier will launch the route on April 2, 2027, just after the Easter holiday. This move makes American Airlines one of only four airlines offering direct service between the two major hubs.
American Airlines JFK Seattle Schedule Details
According to data from Cirium, the airline will operate two daily flights on the 7-hour transcontinental route. The carrier intends to use the 196-seat Airbus A321neo for these services. Ch-aviation records indicate that American Airlines currently operates 75 aircraft configured with this specific seating layout.
The cabin configuration includes 20 domestic first-class seats with a 2-2 arrangement and 36.5 inches of pitch. There are 35 Main Cabin Extra seats with 33 inches of pitch, and 141 standard economy seats with 30 inches of pitch. This equipment marks a shift from the Boeing 757, 767, and 737-800 models the airline previously used on this route before retiring those aircraft types.
One of the return flights to New York will operate as an overnight red-eye service. American Airlines last offered red-eye flights to JFK in 2018. The airline previously served the transcontinental market from 1992 to 2019. During that period, it rarely offered more than one daily flight, with twice-daily service accounting for just 7% of operations between 2004 and 2019.

Market Share and Passenger Volume
The demand for travel between New York and Seattle remains high. Data from the US Department of Transportation (DOT) shows that 691,655 passengers flew between JFK and SEA in the 12 months leading to June 2026. Of those travelers, 98.5% took nonstop flights. When including Newark and LaGuardia airports, the total city-level market reached 1,317,409 passengers.
American Airlines currently holds a small share of this traffic. The DOT reports that the carrier transported just 0.6% of the JFK-SEA passenger volume in the recent period. This is a significant drop from 2018, when American Airlines carried 14.6% of passengers on the route while it was active.
Looking ahead to July 2027, the schedule shows 11 daily departures between the two cities. This volume represents the second-highest number of services ever recorded for that month. Only July 2018 saw more flights, with up to 14 daily departures. The airline plans to offer 63,860 one-way seats in July 2027, trailing only the 66,746 seats available in 2018.
American Airlines and its partner Alaska Airlines will control 55% of the nonstop services on this route. Seattle is the primary hub for Alaska Airlines. JetBlue currently operates a single daily flight, holding 9% of the market. The carrier last flew two daily services on this route in 2023.

Broader Network Expansion at JFK
The return to Seattle is part of a larger expansion at JFK. Between April and July 2027, American Airlines plans to operate 25 domestic routes from the New York airport. These destinations include Austin, Boston, Bozeman, Charlotte, Chicago O’Hare, and Los Angeles, among others. Bozeman, Montana, will be a new addition, launching on July 18, 2027, with four weekly flights using Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft.
With an average of 72 daily domestic departures, American Airlines will rank as the third-largest domestic carrier at JFK during this period. Delta Air Lines will remain the leader with 165 daily domestic departures. JetBlue will hold the second position with 98 daily flights. American Airlines’ domestic offering at JFK will increase by 5% compared to the same period in 2025.
The airline will deploy narrowbody jets for the Seattle route. The last regular widebody operations on this market occurred in 2023, when Delta Air Lines used Airbus A330-900 and Boeing 767 aircraft. The most twin-aisle flights in the past two decades were recorded in 2017.
