A 21-year-old programmer named Lorean Xavier has released a native PC port of P.T., the cancelled Silent Hills demo that defined a generation of horror gaming. The project, titled PT-PC, translates the original PlayStation 4 code to run natively on Windows and Linux systems. It does not use emulation or recreate assets in a new engine, but instead preserves the exact behavior of the 2014 release.

The original P.T. was released as a playable teaser for a Silent Hills reboot by Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro. After Kojima and Konami parted ways, the project was cancelled and the demo was delisted from the PlayStation Store in early 2015. For nearly a decade, fans have relied on emulation or preserved PS4 hard drives to experience the game. Xavier’s work offers a new way to access the title without those limitations.

    Native Code Translation

Xavier’s approach distinguishes the project from previous fan-made recreations. Many earlier attempts used game engines to approximate the look and feel of P.T., but often missed subtle details in lighting, atmosphere, or event triggers. Xavier wanted to avoid this by working directly with the original codebase.

The port requires users to provide their own dumped copy of the P.T. game files. This method allows the project to sidestep copyright issues while ensuring the game runs exactly as intended. According to Xavier, the project has been in development since 2024. He used the shadPS4 emulator as a reference tool to compare the original game’s behavior against his port, but the final product is not a fork or modified version of the emulator.

“I didn’t want to make another interpretation of P.T. or recreate it approximately in another engine,” Xavier said. “I wanted the actual experience, with its original assets, sounds, animations, and behavior, running natively on PC.”

    Preservation and AI Use

The release comes at a time when generative AI is accelerating the creation of console-to-PC ports. Some of these automated efforts have resulted in unstable or janky experiences. Xavier is open about using AI in his workflow, but he draws a clear line between using it as a tool and relying on it for core development.

“I think there’s an important distinction between using AI as a development tool and blindly relying on it to create an entire project you don’t understand,” Xavier explained. He uses AI to help with debugging, identifying issues, and testing code. However, he retains full responsibility for the architecture, implementation decisions, and code review. His background in reverse engineering allowed him to direct the process and ensure the port’s accuracy.

The effort has received praise from Lance McDonald, the Australian creator who datamined P.T. and uncovered many of its secrets years ago. McDonald described the project as a “1:1 port of the entire codebase,” noting that it captures undocumented behaviors that previous recreations missed.

Xavier’s motivation for the project stems from his own childhood experience. He never owned a PS4 and could only watch videos of P.T. on his phone. The idea that such an influential game could become unplayable due to corporate decisions bothered him. He wanted to create the version of the game he always wished existed.

The PT-PC project is now available on GitHub. Users can download the client and run the game on modern PC hardware, ensuring the legacy of the cancelled Silent Hills project remains accessible to new audiences.
