American Airlines Cuts 11 Long-Haul Routes From Philadelphia

American Airlines has eliminated 11 long-haul routes from Philadelphia International Airport (PHL) since 2016, according to data from Simple Flying. The carrier currently operates long-haul flights from 11 hubs and other airports in 2026. Las Vegas is included in this list, but only for the Consumer Electronics Show. Regular services operate from ten of these locations, with Philadelphia serving as a key base.

    Philadelphia Hub Expansion

Cirium Diio data shows that American Airlines will have 22 daily long-haul departures from Philadelphia in July 2027. This represents a 16% increase compared to the same month in 2026. The growth is entirely driven by the carrier’s European network, following the elimination of Doha flights in March 2026. This expansion cements Philadelphia as American’s second-largest long-haul hub.

The airline plans to serve 21 routes from Philadelphia in July 2027. All of these flights will be to Europe. The schedule includes daily flights to Amsterdam, Athens, Barcelona, Budapest, Copenhagen, Dublin, Edinburgh, Lisbon, Madrid, Milan Malpensa, Naples, Nice, Paris CDG, Prague, Rome, Venice, Vienna, and Zurich. London Heathrow will receive two daily flights. The carrier will also introduce new services to Porto and Reykjavik Keflavik.

    Route Cancellations and Fleet Changes

Since 2016, American Airlines has ended 11 long-haul links from Philadelphia. Nine of these routes were to Europe, and two were to the Middle East. Seven of the eliminated markets were inherited from US Airways, from which American gained its Philadelphia hub. The carrier excluded places like Casablanca from this list, even though that route was announced but never began operations.

Most of the canceled routes used the Airbus A330, Boeing 757, or Boeing 767. American Airlines has removed all of these aircraft types from its fleet. When the carrier’s operations from its other hubs are considered, only three of the cities are still in its network. Frankfurt is served from Charlotte and Dallas. Munich is served from Charlotte. Tel Aviv is served from New York JFK. American is due to return to Israel in March 2027, a few months after Delta Air Lines and United Airlines did so.

    Dubrovnik Service History

American Airlines was the first carrier from North America to fly to Dubrovnik, Croatia. The airline operated short flights during the height of the summer in 2019, from June to September. The US Department of Transportation shows that American carried 17,782 round-trip passengers on this route. The load factor was 83.1%, which was good for a brand-new market. It is unknown what fares were needed to achieve that result.

While American has not returned to Dubrovnik, other airlines have entered the market. United Airlines debuted from Newark in June 2021, followed a month later by Delta Air Lines from New York JFK. United continues to operate and now also serves Split. Delta pulled out of Dubrovnik after one season. Air Canada will fly there for the first time next year, touching down from Montreal. This contributes to North America having more flights to Dubrovnik than in any other prior summer.
