Qantas is set to become the first airline to operate scheduled nonstop flights between Sydney Kingsford Smith Airport and Las Vegas Harry Reid International Airport. The Australian flag carrier will launch this new route on December 29, utilizing a Boeing 787-9 aircraft for a three-weekly rotation.
Qantas nonstop Las Vegas service details
The new service marks a significant shift from previous operations. While Qantas and its low-cost subsidiary Jetstar have historically flown to Las Vegas on a charter basis, this December launch represents the first regular scheduled service between the two cities. The route will operate seasonally from December through March, targeting the peak travel period that includes New Year celebrations and major industry events like the Consumer Electronics Show.

According to the airline, the direct flight saves travelers up to five hours compared to connecting through other United States gateways such as Los Angeles, San Francisco, or Dallas. Las Vegas becomes Qantas’ 101st destination and its eighth city in the Americas. The airline already maintains a network in the region that includes Los Angeles, San Francisco, Honolulu, Dallas, New York, Vancouver, and Santiago.
Australia currently stands as the second-largest overseas market for visitors to Las Vegas. Approximately 250,000 Australians travel to the city annually, while roughly 750,000 Americans visit Australia each year. The decision to convert the charter operations into scheduled flights reflects the sustained demand from Australian travelers seeking unique international destinations.

Partnership and fleet flexibility
The expansion is supported by Qantas’ ongoing fleet renewal program. The introduction of more fuel-efficient aircraft has provided the carrier with the operational flexibility to deploy planes on routes with consistent demand. This strategic shift has also created additional opportunities for pilots and cabin crew within the company.
Passengers booking this route can benefit from the joint business venture between Qantas and American Airlines. The alliance allows travelers to book connecting itineraries across Australia, New Zealand, and North America on a single ticket. This partnership extends to frequent flyer programs, enabling customers to earn and redeem both Qantas Points and American AAdvantage Miles. Status bonuses and airport lounge access are also available depending on the class of travel and frequent flyer status.

Previous charter flights to Las Vegas were often driven by specific events, such as National Rugby League games hosted in Nevada. The transition to a scheduled service indicates a broader appetite for leisure travel to the city. The first flight is scheduled to depart Sydney on December 29, positioning the airline to capture the high volume of travelers heading to Las Vegas for New Year’s Eve festivities.
