Dr. Kirsten Banks, a science communicator and author, recently reflected on a pivotal moment from her time as an astronomy guide at the Sydney Observatory. During her first year of a science degree, she led tours for groups of approximately 20 people, using telescopes to view celestial bodies and a 3D theatre to explore the universe when weather conditions were poor.

One of her favorite segments involved the Hubble Ultra Deep Field image. She would explain that the Hubble Space Telescope had stared at a patch of sky the size of a grain of sand held at arm’s length for 11 days. This long exposure captured light from the farthest corners of the universe. After revealing the image, she would point out the spiky objects in the frame. She identified four as stars within our own Milky Way galaxy and clarified that every other blob or smudge was a separate galaxy.

    The Sydney Observatory Tour

On one particular evening, cloud cover prevented clear telescope viewing. The group shifted their attention to the stars on the Australian flag atop the Sydney Harbour Bridge before moving to the 3D theatre. The conversation eventually turned to black holes, a topic that consistently engages audiences.

Banks explained the concept of spaghettification. This phenomenon occurs when an object approaches a black hole too closely. The gravitational pull at the event horizon is so intense that not even light can escape. However, gravity weakens rapidly with distance. If a person were falling feet first toward a black hole, the gravitational force on their feet would be significantly stronger than on their head. This difference in pull would stretch the body out, resembling a long piece of spaghetti.

    A Child’s Literal Interpretation

Immediately after this explanation, a young girl in the group, aged about eight, raised her hand. Banks, who views answering questions as a core part of her role as a scientist, anticipated a complex inquiry. Instead, the child asked a direct question: “So would the blood be the sauce?”

The group reacted with laughter. Banks paused to process the query. She realized the child had interpreted the analogy literally. If the body is stretched like pasta, the internal fluids would indeed act as the sauce. The explanation, which Banks had considered family-friendly, had inadvertently introduced a visceral and unintended image.

This interaction taught Banks two critical lessons. First, she decided to explain spaghettification using stars falling into black holes rather than humans. This shift removed the uncomfortable biological imagery while maintaining scientific accuracy. Second, she recognized that curiosity manifests in many forms. Even seemingly silly questions can reveal gaps in how scientific concepts are communicated.

Banks encourages readers to ask questions that help them understand the world better. She notes that such inquiries, regardless of how simple they seem, can have lasting impacts. Her reflections are drawn from her book “Lost in Space: Curiously Cosmic Stories,” published by Pan Macmillan Australia.
