The Collins English Dictionary has officially named “mogging” as its word of the year for 2026. The term, which describes the act of outshining or upstaging someone, saw a 210% increase in usage over the past twelve months. This surge marks a significant shift in how digital slang enters mainstream vocabulary.

Gen Z and Alpha drive linguistic shift

Alex Beecroft, managing director of Collins, noted that the selection highlights how younger generations reshape language. He stated that the word demonstrates how Gen Z and Gen Alpha have adopted a term and turned it into humorous slang. This process effectively allows these groups to make the language their own.

The word is particularly popular among members of Generation Z and Generation Alpha. It appears frequently in both online interactions and everyday conversation. The rise of the term reflects broader changes in how social media influences daily speech patterns.

From niche forums to mainstream usage

While the term is now widely recognized, its origins lie in more specific subcultures. It is often traced back to the acronym AMOG, which stands for Alpha Male of the Group. The concept was previously associated with bodybuilding forums in the mid-2010s. It also found a home in the manosphere and incel communities.

Today, the definition has broadened significantly. It is no longer confined to those niche groups. The term is now used as a playful put-down or a compliment, depending on the context. It is frequently heard in looks maxxing communities, where online groups share advice on maximizing physical attractiveness.

Lexicographers at Collins analyze usage patterns to identify the latest linguistic trends. They examine how often words are used across various platforms. This data-driven approach helps them select a word that accurately reflects the current cultural moment.

    Other notable dictionary entries

The selection of mogging follows the 2025 choice of “vibe coding.” That term described the process of creating applications by describing them to artificial intelligence rather than writing code manually. The 2026 shortlist included several other terms that gained traction in 2026.

Ghost job appeared on the list, referring to job postings with no intention of hiring. Hydration break was included after becoming famous during this year’s World Cup. P(doom) remained on the radar as an estimation of the probability of an AI-aided collapse of civilization. Manchesterism, a term linked to Prime Minister Andy Burnham, also made the cut for its focus on regional power devolution.

Collins draws from a wide range of sources to track the evolution of the English language. Social media plays a key role in this analysis. The dictionary aims to reflect how language changes in the UK each year. The choice of mogging underscores the growing influence of digital culture on traditional linguistic standards.
