The world premiere of a feature film billed as the first photorealistic, AI-generated work in the Yoruba language ended in a technical failure last week. User demand overwhelmed the servers of Docuth, the streaming platform hosting the release of “Asiri Ilu Awon Osu,” also known as “Mystery of Osu Land.” The incident highlighted the tension between the excitement surrounding artificial intelligence in African cinema and the practical limitations on the ground.

Nigerian producers Mysterious Tech Studio apologized for the glitch on social media. They asked viewers not to be discouraged by the access issues, noting that the platform had since stabilized. The film, which used AI for approximately 80 percent of its scenes and live-action footage for the remaining 20 percent, is now available to stream. The company plans to focus on festival screenings and wider press coverage before considering a follow-up project.

    Infrastructure and Access Challenges

Industry professionals gathering at the Durban FilmMart recently discussed how these technical hurdles affect the broader adoption of AI tools. Tamara Dawit of Ethiopian Canadian production company Gobez Media described high data costs, low broadband speeds, and payment processing difficulties as systemic barriers. She questioned whether the industry can ensure that everyone benefits from technological advancements if access remains restricted.

Zukisani Karabo Mabece of Digicine Motion Picture, a Johannesburg-based company, agreed that AI is not a simple solution. His company has developed digital tools to democratize access to technology for local filmmakers. Mabece noted that existing AI models are often biased toward Western data. He stated that his team had to build their own language models to accommodate local languages and serve the specific needs of the African market.

    Ethical Concerns and Policy Risks

The rapid integration of AI also raises ethical questions about cultural representation and data bias. Amilcar Patel, co-chair of the South African Screen Federation, warned against importing cultural frameworks that do not protect vulnerable groups into legislative systems. He pointed to a recent incident where the South African government withdrew a draft AI policy after journalists found that several academic citations were hallucinations by the AI tool used to draft the document.

Samantha Kaine of the Independent Media Producers Assn. of Creative Talent emphasized that AI mirrors societal inequities. She noted that major models are trained largely on Western culture, which risks erasing local identities. These concerns are expected to be central to the upcoming Africa AI Summit in Cape Town, which aims to create a roadmap for AI deployment across the continent with support from partners including the World Bank and major tech firms.

Kafilat Yusuff of Mysterious Tech Studio said the company is documenting its hybrid production pipeline to help other African filmmakers reduce costs in the future. She highlighted that the experience raised important questions about human performer consent, compensation, and creative ownership. The company remains focused on securing a stable global streaming release to ensure all interested viewers can access the film.
