Rachel Jupp, the newly appointed director of news at the BBC, has declared that winning back younger viewers is a top priority for the public broadcaster. In her first message to staff, Jupp emphasized that the organization must adapt urgently to meet audiences where they currently consume content.

Jupp, who officially began her role on Monday, replaced Deborah Turness. Her appointment comes as the BBC faces significant financial pressure and internal uncertainty regarding potential job cuts. The new director acknowledged the difficult atmosphere within the newsroom but stressed the need for clear direction and editorial excellence.

    Urgent Adaptation for Younger Audiences

In an email to staff, Jupp noted that people are changing how they get their news. She pointed out that too many younger viewers are not finding BBC content. To address this, she outlined a strategy to be where these audiences are, creating journalism specifically made for them.

“We need to adapt urgently we need to be where they are, with journalism made for them,” Jupp wrote. She added that the news division must test new ideas and judge success based on outcomes rather than just activity. This approach mirrors comments made by Matt Brittin, the BBC’s new director general, who recently told staff to celebrate outcomes more than activity.

Jupp’s background includes roles at Channel 4 News and as editor of Panorama. She has also led the BBC’s work on generative AI. Her experience in digital transformation and long-form journalism positions her to oversee the UK’s largest newsroom.

    Budget Cuts and Staff Uncertainty

Alongside the strategic shift, Jupp addressed the financial challenges facing BBC News. The division announced in June that it was canceling shows like Radio 4’s The World Tonight to save 25 million pounds. However, the news division still needs to find another 25 million pounds in savings in the coming months.

Jupp acknowledged that this uncertainty is difficult for staff. She promised to share more information about savings plans later this month. “I will announce changes as soon as I can, and recognise that uncertainty is difficult,” she said. She also thanked outgoing director Jonathan Munro for his stability during a tough period.

Jupp will earn a salary of 400,000 pounds, which is 50,000 pounds less than her predecessor. She emphasized her commitment to supporting distinctive, quality journalism. This includes original reporting, sharp analysis, and investigations delivered to the highest editorial standards.

The new director plans to visit newsrooms across the UK and meet with international teams. She will host an all-staff call on Wednesday to discuss her vision and answer questions. Jupp also mentioned her role as a sponsor for the BBC’s Parents’ Network, highlighting her interest in making journalism compatible with family life.
