When law enforcement officers arrived at the scene, they found two men and one woman unresponsive outside. A fourth victim, a male, was later pronounced dead at the University of Alabama Hospital. The police reported that they recovered over 100 shell casings from the area, indicating the brutal intensity of the attack.

The victims included a wide range of individuals who were enjoying their night out. Three of the deceased victims have been identified as Anitra Holloman, 21, of Bessemer; and Tahj Booker, 27, and Carlos McCain, 27, both from Birmingham. Mayor’s Call for Action

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin has called for stronger gun control measures, particularly against illegal gun conversion devices known as “Glock switches.” These devices can convert semi-automatic weapons into fully automatic firearms, making them highly dangerous in public spaces. Although federally banned, these devices remain unregulated under state law. Woodfin expressed his frustration with the current legal limitations, urging Alabama lawmakers to take swift action to close these loopholes and provide local law enforcement with the tools they need to combat gun violence.

“We need the necessary tools to fight this issue,” said Mayor Woodfin. “We don’t have home rule, and it feels like we’re trying to solve a problem with our hands tied behind our backs.”

The Birmingham Police Department, in collaboration with the FBI and ATF, is actively investigating the shooting. No suspects have been apprehended yet, but police believe the shooting was an orchestrated hit targeting one individual. Anyone with information is urged to come forward to assist in bringing those responsible to justice.

Gun Violence in Birmingham

This incident adds to the grim tally of mass shootings in the U.S. in 2024, with this Birmingham shooting marking one of the most violent in recent months. The city’s crime statistics show an alarming increase in homicides and gun-related incidents. Earlier this year, Birmingham experienced another mass shooting at a nightclub, which resulted in multiple fatalities.

Despite a national trend of declining crime rates, Birmingham has seen a 41.7% increase in murders compared to the same period in 2023. City officials are urging state and federal authorities to prioritize gun violence prevention measures, including tighter regulations on firearms and machine gun conversion devices.
