Boeing has released its 2026 World Air Cargo Forecast, projecting that global air cargo traffic will double over the next two decades. The report indicates the worldwide cargo fleet is set to expand from 2,395 planes in 2025 to 4,010 by 2045. This growth is largely driven by time-sensitive sectors including advanced manufacturing, e-commerce, and artificial intelligence hardware.

    AI and E-commerce Drive Demand

The cargo industry experienced exceptional growth in 2025, increasing by nearly 5% from the previous year to reach record levels. Data from the International Air Transport Association (IATA) shows that over 70% of goods within the AI industry were transported by air in 2025. This shift has forced freight airlines to urgently increase capacity with new aircraft to handle high-value, time-critical shipments.

Geopolitical instability has further complicated logistics. Ongoing crises in the Middle East and the war in Ukraine have required airlines to reroute flights, adding resilience requirements to global supply chains. These disruptions have highlighted the strategic value of dedicated freighters for dynamic rerouting and reliable transport.

Darren Hulst, Boeing vice president of Commercial Marketing, stated that air cargo’s adaptability and speed are essential for evolving supply chains. He noted that as global trade patterns change, dedicated freighters will remain critical to global commerce.

    Emissions Regulations Limit Production Options

While demand is rising, regulators are making it difficult for the industry to fill the capacity gap through traditional means. New emissions regulations prevent the production of high-emission aircraft designs. Boeing has been advocating for a waiver to build an additional 35 Boeing 777 Freighters through December 2030. Without this partial waiver, the company would have been required to stop production of the current 777F model after December 31, 2027.

Under current Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) rules, jets that do not meet strict emissions and fuel standards cannot receive an airworthiness certificate. This means manufacturers cannot simply produce older, less efficient models to meet demand. Instead, Boeing must shift production toward cutting-edge freighters like the delayed 777-8F, which offers significant reductions in fuel use and CO2 emissions compared to previous generations.

To support the projected fleet growth, airlines will need 2,930 new and converted freighters over the next two decades. Fifty-five percent of these will add new capacity, while the remaining 45% will replace outdated aircraft. Two-thirds of the capacity-adding units are expected to be freighter conversions of older passenger planes.

    Asia Leads Market Expansion

Boeing’s data identifies Asia as the primary engine for this expansion. The region is expected to sustain an annual growth rate of 3.5%, eventually representing 60% of the global air freight market by 2045. Dedicated freighters are projected to account for more than half of global air traffic, surpassing the volume carried in the bellies of passenger aircraft.

The broader airline industry is also set for significant growth, with approximately 45,000 new aircraft needed to be delivered by 2043. This combination of fleet renewal and capacity expansion underscores the critical role of air cargo in the global economy, even as manufacturers navigate the complex intersection of rising demand and environmental compliance.
