A leaked trailer for The CW’s long-rumored live-action adaptation of the beloved animated series “The Powerpuff Girls” has surfaced online. The leaked Powerpuff Girls trailer is a rare glimpse into a project that was once poised to reinvent a classic but ultimately never saw the light of day.
What Went Wrong With The Powerpuff Girls Live-Action?
Back in 2021, CW took a bold step by ordering a live-action pilot for “Powerpuff Girls.” The Powerpuff Girls’ cast included Chloe Bennet as Blossom, Dove Cameron as Bubbles, Yana Perrault as Buttercup, and Donald Faison as Professor Drake Utonium, the series promised to reimagine the adventures of the pint-sized superheroes for a modern audience. Esteemed creative figures such as Oscar-winner Diablo Cody and Heather Regnier were at the helm, with production support from Warner Bros. TV, Greg Berlanti, and Sarah Schechter.

However, despite the promising start, internal concerns over the show’s tone began to surface. Sources revealed that the pilot’s approach—featuring adult, troubled versions of the Powerpuff Girls—strayed too far from the original’s charm. The network reportedly struggled with its campy yet dark narrative, ultimately leading to the project’s cancellation in May 2023. At one point, The CW was even considering a trailer for upfronts, but the final product never passed internal standards.
Critics argue that by transforming the characters into disillusioned, troubled twenty-somethings, the project sacrificed the whimsical innocence that defined the series. Original creator Craig McCracken himself has expressed concerns in past interviews that such a drastic change would strip away the essence of the Powerpuff Girls. In fact, McCracken is now working on a new animated reboot with Hanna-Barbera Studios Europe that aims to recapture the magic of the original.
The Leaked Powerpuff Girls Trailer
The Powerpuff Girls live action concept, as seen in the leaked trailer, takes a wildly different approach compared to its animated predecessor. The footage, approximately three and a half minutes long, introduces viewers to a grown-up version of the iconic trio. In this reimagining:
- Blossom is depicted as perpetually stressed, burdened by the responsibilities of leadership.
- Bubbles is shown struggling with excessive drinking—she even has a scene where she vomits into a trash can.
- Buttercup emerges as a fiercely rebellious figure, famously declaring, “I’m not wearing that dress anymore, it’s gender normative and ass ugly.”
The trailer further hints at a dark twist: an accidental killing of the adult human version of Mojo Jojo, which sends shockwaves through the city of Townsville. This catastrophic event forces the three heroines to part ways—Blossom flees, Buttercup takes up firefighting, and Bubbles relocates to Hollywood. In a surprising twist, Mojo Jojo’s vengeful son, Joseph “Jojo” Mondel Jr., steps into the political arena as Townsville’s mayor, setting the stage for a dramatic reunion of the sisters to reclaim their legacy and save their city.
Adding to the intrigue, the trailer even teases a romantic subplot between Blossom and Jojo Jr., though Blossom quickly downplays any lingering infatuation with a sharp retort. The dialogue throughout the trailer is infused with meta-humor and biting satire, a stark departure from the lighthearted tone of the original animated series.
However, adding to the controversy, Warner Bros. Television reportedly issued a DMCA takedown on the trailer’s YouTube upload shortly after its leak, highlighting the sensitive nature of the unreleased content.
Although the live-action adaptation never made it to air, the leaked trailer provides an intriguing snapshot of what might have been—a daring reinterpretation of a cherished animated series. Whether this Powerpuff Girls live action experiment would have resonated with audiences remains a subject of debate.
