    On January 4, 2025, President Joe Biden presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian honor, to 19 extraordinary individuals. This prestigious award recognizes those who have made exemplary contributions to the prosperity, values, or security of the United States, as well as world peace or significant public or private endeavors.

    President Biden emphasized that these honorees exemplify the best of humanity. “You inspire, bring healing and joy, and defend the values of America,” he said during the ceremony. Below is the complete list of recipients and their remarkable achievements.

    What Is the Presidential Medal of Freedom?

    The Presidential Medal of Freedom was established in 1963 by President John F. Kennedy. It is awarded to individuals who have profoundly impacted society through public service, cultural contributions, advocacy, or groundbreaking achievements in various fields.

    The 2025 Recipients of the Presidential Medal of Freedom

    José Andrés

    Ashton B. Carter (Posthumous)

    The late Ashton Carter, former Secretary of Defense, made groundbreaking contributions to the U.S. military. He championed diversity by opening combat roles to women and enabling transgender service members to serve openly.

    Hillary Rodham Clinton

    Fannie Lou Hamer (Posthumous)

    A champion of civil rights, Fannie Lou Hamer co-founded the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party, pushing for equal representation and laying the groundwork for the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

    Earvin “Magic” Johnson
