A Life in Acting and Racing
Born on December 28, 1960, in Los Angeles, Chad McQueen was immersed in Hollywood from an early age, growing up as the son of Steve McQueen, the highest-paid actor of the 1960s and 1970s, and Neile Adams, a renowned Broadway performer. He gained fame playing the role of Dutch, a Cobra Kai bully, in the 1984 classic “The Karate Kid” and its sequel, “The Karate Kid Part II.”
Beyond his role in “Karate Kid,” McQueen appeared in films such as “New York Cop” and “Red Line,” and had plans to reprise his character in the Netflix spin-off “Cobra Kai,” which never came to fruition. Despite his Hollywood connections and acting talent, McQueen’s passion lay in racing, following in the footsteps of his father, who was known for his love of cars and motorsports.
Transition to Racing and Legacy
Chad McQueen shifted his focus to racing in the 1990s, competing in prestigious events like the 24 Hours of Le Mans and the 12 Hours of Sebring. In 2010, he founded McQueen Racing, a company specializing in high-performance cars and motorcycles. “Racing was always in my blood,” McQueen once said. “I grew up surrounded by film and motorsports, and motorsports always attracted me more.”
McQueen’s commitment to racing was not without challenges. In 2006, he survived a near-fatal accident during a practice session for the Daytona International Speedway’s Rolex 24 event, which left him in a coma for nearly a month. Despite his injuries, McQueen continued to pursue his passion, establishing a legacy in the racing world that complemented his Hollywood roots.
Family Tributes And Lasting Legacy
McQueen is survived by his wife, Jeanie Galbraith, and his children, Chase and Madison, who have taken over the operations of McQueen Racing. “Together, Chase and Madison form a dynamic team, upholding their father’s legacy while infusing their own passion for the joy of racing,” states the McQueen Racing website. He is also survived by his eldest son, Steven R. McQueen, known for his roles in “The Vampire Diaries” and “Chicago Fire,” from his previous marriage to actress Stacey Toten.
In a statement posted on Instagram, McQueen’s family expressed their grief: “His remarkable journey as a loving father to us, along with his unwavering commitment to our mother, truly exemplified a life filled with love and dedication. His passion for racing not only highlighted his exceptional talent but also served as a way to honor his father’s legacy.”
