The Veluwe region in the Netherlands offers a distinct blend of untamed nature and high culture, easily accessible by bicycle. This forest-rich ridge of hills stretches 37 miles from north to south, providing a diverse landscape that includes heathlands, pine forests, and historic towns. For travelers seeking an autumnal break, the area delivers a mix of wildlife spotting, royal history, and world-class art.

Hoge Veluwe National Park and Wildlife

The centerpiece of the region is Hoge Veluwe National Park, a 5,400-hectare nature reserve in Gelderland located about an hour and a half from Amsterdam. The park features 25 miles of cycling paths and provides around 2,000 free-to-use white bicycles for visitors to navigate the terrain. The landscape shifts rapidly from expansive dusty pink heathlands with sloping sand dunes to fragrant Scots pine forests where sunlight filters through red-barked trees.

Nature guides emphasize the biodiversity of the area. Visitors can observe roe deer, beavers, wild boar, and five types of woodpecker. Wolves returned to the country in 2015 after a 150-year absence, though their presence remains a controversial topic for local farmers concerned about livestock. While wolves are elusive, other wildlife such as buzzards and frogs are more commonly spotted. The park also offers wildlife observation areas with enclosed viewing spaces where visitors can watch deer pass through at night.

For those visiting outside peak times, the trails offer a sense of serenity. However, visitors should remain aware of local wildlife, including adders with dark zigzag stripes. The park entrance costs €13.85 per adult.

    Art, Palaces, and Historic Towns

Within the national park lies the Kröller-Müller Museum, a revered national art museum and sculpture garden. Founded by art collector Helene Kröller-Müller and her husband Anton, a shipping magnate, the estate was later donated to the state. The museum is currently hosting a significant exhibition, displaying all 88 of its Vincent van Gogh paintings together for the first time since 1984. This collection remains on view until 3 January.

The surrounding sculpture park is one of the largest in Europe, featuring approximately 200 pieces scattered across open grass and forest areas. Nearby stands Jachthuis Sint Hubertus, the former country residence of the Kröller-Müller family. The building includes a watchtower over 30 meters tall, which Helene Kröller-Müller reportedly favored for afternoon tea.

Beyond the park, the region offers substantial historical attractions. Paleis Het Loo in Apeldoorn serves as a 17th-century royal palace. It was the summer residence and hunting lodge of William of Orange III and Princess Mary II Stuart. The palace features ornate rooms, formal symmetrical gardens, and an underground museum detailing the Dutch royal family. The staircase contains the second-largest mural in the Netherlands.

The historic Hanseatic city of Harderwijk, situated on the shores of Wolderwijd lake, provides a different cultural experience. Visitors can explore narrow cobblestone streets, medieval city walls, and the Old Town Hall. The city retains a traditional atmosphere, with local musicians often performing on portable wooden organs in the streets.

    Accommodation and Dining

Travelers can choose from various lodging options that reflect the region’s natural setting. Buitenplaats Petersburg, located on the edge of Hoge Veluwe National Park, offers sleek cabins with floor-to-ceiling forest views. The property features an Italian restaurant, Il Lupo, with an outdoor terrace. Cabins at this location start from €110.

For those staying near Apeldoorn, Hotel de Echoput is a family-run modern hotel surrounded by the forest. Its Grand Bistro Echo focuses on local ingredients, offering dishes such as fried mushrooms with creamy Dordogne sauce and vegan cheesecake. Double rooms at the hotel start from €169.

Another option is Vakantieoord Het Lorkenbos in Otterlo, a holiday park surrounded by trees. It offers camping sites from €23 a night and bungalows from €320 for two nights. The park is decorated with fairy lights and bunting, creating a cozy atmosphere described by the Dutch word “gezellig.” Dining options in the area include Restaurant De Hoge Veluwe at Park Paviljoen, which offers terrace seating.

Travel to the region is facilitated by rail connections. Eurostar runs from London to Amsterdam, and Omio provided train travel for this itinerary. The combination of cycling paths, art collections, and historic sites makes the Veluwe a distinct destination for autumn travel.
