Apple is preparing for a significant overhaul of the iPad mini lineup for the first time since 2021. According to recent reports, the next generation device will introduce a new display technology and a major processor upgrade. This marks the first chip refresh for the compact tablet since 2024.
OLED Display and Performance Upgrades
The most anticipated change for the iPad mini 8 is the transition to an OLED screen. While the device will not feature the Tandem OLED technology found in the iPad Pro, users can expect more vibrant colors, improved contrast, and higher brightness levels compared to the current LCD model.
There is ongoing uncertainty regarding the refresh rate. Although many consumers hope for a 120Hz ProMotion display, current information suggests the new iPad mini might remain at 60Hz. This would be a notable departure from the high-refresh-rate trend seen in other premium tablets.
Under the hood, the device is expected to move from the current A17 Pro chip to the new A20 Pro. This upgrade includes an increase in memory from 8GB to 12GB. The additional memory is designed to support advanced on-device AI models, which could enhance Siri’s voice and dictation capabilities. Performance benchmarks suggest the A20 Pro will deliver a 60% improvement in multi-core CPU speed and a 166% boost in GPU performance over its predecessor.
Design Changes and Pricing
Apple is reportedly working on making the iPad mini water-resistant. This would be the first time the mini line has received this feature. The company is implementing a new casing and redesigned speakers to help prevent water ingress.
Financial details have also emerged from Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman. He states that the new iPad mini with OLED and the A20 Pro chip could start at $799. This represents a substantial increase from the current model’s starting price of $599. It remains unclear whether Apple will maintain the 128GB base storage option at this higher price point or if the entry-level model will jump to 256GB.
These reports highlight a shift in Apple’s strategy for its smallest tablet. The combination of a premium display, a powerful new chip, and water resistance suggests a move toward a more professional-grade device. However, the potential price increase and the lack of a confirmed launch date leave some questions unanswered for consumers waiting for the update.
