A widespread Google Cloud outage on June 12, 2025, severely disrupted many of the most-used online platforms globally. Services relying on Google Cloud infrastructure, including Spotify, Discord, Snapchat, Twitch, Shopify, and Google’s own Gmail and Drive, experienced significant downtime and connectivity issues.

    What Services Were Impacted?

    • Spotify saw over 44,000 reports of issues on Downdetector, with users encountering error messages such as “Audiences in Jwt are not allowed.”

    • Discord saw more than 10,000 reports, with users unable to send messages or establish server connections.

    • Google services—Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Meet, Chat, and Voice—also faced disruptions, with thousands of users unable to access or use these platforms.

Additionally, smart home services using Google Cloud—like Google Home and Nest devices—experienced problems, as did other apps such as Twitch, Anthropic, Shopify, and Snapchat.

When Did The Google Cloud Outage Happened?

    • ≈ 12:00 p.m. ET – Google Cloud’s status page first flagged “infrastructure component issues.”

    • ≈ 1:51 p.m. ET – Outages began spiking, impacting connectivity for services across the U.S. and beyond.

    • ≈ 3:00–4:00 p.m. ET – The highest number of user reports, particularly on Spotify. Google Cloud reported root causes tied to Identity and Access Management services.

    • ≈ 6:15–6:30 p.m. ET – Google announced most services were restored, though “residual impact” remained in some regions.

    Why Did It Happen?

The outage stemmed from failures within Google Cloud’s identity and access management infrastructure, a crucial component underpinning authentication and security for many services. One early notice stated there was “an issue with Google Cloud infrastructure components.” This triggered cascading failures across the platform until backups and mitigation protocols were applied.

Google’s engineering teams quickly intervened, diagnosing the issue and applying fixes to restore functionality, although a full resolution timeline was not provided immediately.

    • Reliance on cloud providers: The outage underscores how modern services are tightly integrated with cloud platforms. A failure in one provider can knock out services across the digital landscape.

    • Identity and access as a critical vulnerability: The failure happened in a core security layer—underscoring its importance and the systemic risk such disruptions pose.

    Official Response

    • Spotify advised users to clear cache or switch browsers when encountering login issues.

    • Cloudflare attributed disruptions to Google Cloud’s outage, clarifying their core services remained unaffected.

    • Amazon Web Services confirmed it experienced no related issues.

So Has The Google Cloud Outage Been Resolved?

    • The outage has largely been mitigated and most services restored.

    • Users of Google-based platforms may still experience intermittent delays or authentication issues.

    • No financial losses related to this specific incident have been reported, but disruptions highlight the vulnerability in over-reliance on third-party cloud services.

A single failure in cloud infrastructure can momentarily destabilize wide swaths of the internet. Whether it’s Spotify playlists buffering, login issues in Gmail, or your smart home going silent, dependency on a few key providers means fault lines can quickly appear. Organizations—and consumers—are reminded of the value in diverse redundancy and robust fallback systems.
