NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman has appointed Stephen Cash as the director of the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. The leadership change takes effect on Monday, Oct. 19, 2026. Cash, a veteran aerospace engineer, returns to the center where he started his career more than 40 years ago.

    Stephen Cash NASA Leadership Role

Cash brings decades of experience in human spaceflight and propulsion systems to the position. He previously served as the manager of Marshall’s Space Shuttle Propulsion Office, overseeing critical systems during the shuttle’s final missions. From 2011 until his retirement in 2016, he directed the Safety and Mission Assurance Directorate, focusing on reliability and quality engineering across the center.

After leaving NASA, Cash continued his work in the aerospace sector. He served as vice president for advanced space systems at Axient, supporting major spaceflight programs. In 2024, he was inducted into the Alabama Engineering Hall of Fame for his contributions to the nation’s space program.

Isaacman highlighted Cash’s deep technical background in the appointment announcement. The administrator noted that Cash has spent his career working with the hardware and personnel that drive NASA’s most critical missions. Isaacman emphasized that Cash’s experience is vital as the center takes on new challenges in advanced propulsion and nuclear power.

Marshall Space Flight Center Artemis and SLS Roles

As director, Cash will oversee a workforce of more than 5,000 civil service and contractor employees. The center manages a broad portfolio of activities, including scientific research and technology development. Marshall plays a central role in the Artemis program, which aims to return humans to the Moon and eventually send astronauts to Mars.

The facility is responsible for developing the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket. It also manages the Human Landing System Program, which provides the spacecraft that will carry astronauts on the lunar surface. These capabilities are essential for sustained exploration of the Moon and future deep space missions.

Nuclear power and propulsion remain a key focus area for the center. This technology is expected to grow in importance as NASA works toward sending the first humans to Mars. The center has played a central role in American space exploration since its establishment in 1960, from developing Saturn rockets for the Apollo missions to advancing modern propulsion systems.

Amit Kshatriya, NASA’s associate administrator and chief engineer, praised Cash’s understanding of the center’s workforce. Kshatriya stated that engineering excellence is sustained by giving talented people the opportunity to design, build, and test hardware. He noted that Cash’s leadership will help ensure the workforce has the expertise needed to deliver ambitious missions.

Cash succeeds Rae Ann Meyer, who has served as acting center director since September 2025. Meyer previously held the roles of deputy center director and associate director. She provided continuity across the center’s programs and operations during her tenure. Meyer will return to her role as Deputy Center Director.

“It is a profound honor to be back home at the Marshall Space Flight Center,” Cash said in a statement. “I am humbled to stand alongside the brilliant minds here as we continue to turn the impossible into everyday history.”
