Bill Drysdale has spent the last eight years transforming his garage into a workshop, fabricating a Porsche 904 replica from raw materials. The project began when the 68-year-old retired engineer realized he could never afford the original sports car he had admired since his youth. Instead of abandoning the dream, he decided to build one himself.

    From Silverstone to the Garage

Drysdale first encountered the Porsche 904 at the Silverstone racetrack in the UK when he was 26. He was captivated by the vehicle’s sound and design, vowing to own one someday. As the years passed, the market value of the original car climbed past £1 million, making purchase impossible. After retiring at 58 from a role as international president for a Canadian company, Drysdale moved back to his native Scotland and formulated a new plan.

His fascination with automobiles started early in Wigtown, Scotland. His grandfather worked as a chauffeur, and Drysdale attended his first race at age 12 with his father. The two shared a deep bond over motorsport, listening to the Le Mans 24 Hour race on the radio. Drysdale taught his father to drive at 14. His father died when Drysdale was 21, and his mother spent 23 years in a hospital due to multiple sclerosis. These early losses fostered a strong sense of independence and determination in Drysdale.

He studied maths and physics at the University of Glasgow before starting his career as a graduate apprentice engineer at a brake manufacturer. He enjoyed the competitive spirit of sprint racing, which focused on competing against the clock rather than other drivers. He married and had two children, eventually pausing his racing activities to focus on his international career, which took him to India, South Africa, Brazil, Japan, and Australia.

    Building the Car from Scratch

Upon deciding to build the car, Drysdale enrolled in night school for six months to learn welding. He obtained a blueprint of the original Porsche 904 through a chain of acquaintances. The construction process began in his garage with a wooden model, which he then refined using plaster of Paris. From these forms, he created fibreglass moulds. His wife, Lucia, assisted him in mixing the resin required for the body panels.

He fabricated the doors, bonnet, front and rear wings, interior, and instrument panel himself. Once the body was complete, he focused on the engineering aspects, designing the suspension and fabricating the chassis entirely from scratch. He purchased a secondhand engine and transmission to integrate into the frame.

The project was not without challenges. Drysdale admitted that his children initially thought he was “off his rocker.” There were periods of several months where he avoided the garage due to frustration, but his enthusiasm eventually returned. He completed the vehicle at age 68, naming it the Porsche 904FF, with the double Fs standing for “effing fake” to acknowledge its non-original status.

After finishing the build, Drysdale transported the car to test days at various race tracks in Scotland, England, France, and Switzerland. He used these sessions to adjust the handling and prepare for competition. He participated in speed hill climbs and sprints until February of this year.

    Continuing the Legacy

At 87, Drysdale suffered a stroke that affected his sight, ending his ability to drive the car. He described the adjustment as difficult but is coming to terms with the change. The car remains active in the racing community, driven by friends while Drysdale participates as the entrant. He plans to remain in the paddock for the next season, supporting the driver from the pit.

Drysdale believes the project honors his father’s memory and his own life philosophy. “I think my dad would have said: ‘Yep, that’s my son,'” he said. “The car has given me a dream. I’m a great believer that you must have a dream. A dream to me is something you really would like to do but don’t know if you ever will. That’s my philosophy in life. Look forward. And do the things that you want to do.”
