Tesla has officially confirmed it will not sell the Cybertruck in Australia and New Zealand, ending a long-standing uncertainty for customers who reserved the electric pickup truck years ago. The automaker sent emails to these early adopters stating that its plans to produce the vehicle for these specific regions have been discontinued.

Refunds and Compensation for Early Buyers

Because Tesla can no longer fulfill orders for these markets, the company is issuing full refunds for all deposits made by customers in Australia and New Zealand. These refunds will be processed within 30 days of the customers receiving the confirmation email. In addition to the financial reimbursement, Tesla is offering a specific incentive to retain these customers within its broader ecosystem. Buyers who choose to order a new Model 3 or Model Y will receive free year-long access to the Full Self-Driving (Supervised) software package.

This decision resolves a question that had persisted for several years regarding the availability of the Cybertruck in the Southern Hemisphere. The vehicle’s unique design and manufacturing requirements created significant barriers to entry in these markets, ultimately leading to the cancellation of local sales plans.

    Right-Hand Drive Manufacturing Challenges

According to Drive Australia, the primary obstacle to selling the Cybertruck in these countries was the lack of a right-hand drive configuration. Sources indicated that Tesla’s manufacturing facility in Texas was not configured to produce the Cybertruck with the steering wheel on the right side. Without this specific setup, the vehicle cannot be legally driven on public roads in Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, Japan, and Ireland.

The absence of a right-hand drive version has been a consistent issue since the automaker began delivering the vehicle to early buyers in 2023. The specialized stainless-steel exoskeleton and rigid frame of the Cybertruck likely complicate the engineering changes required to adapt the interior layout for different driving sides, contributing to the decision to halt production for these regions.

    Regulatory Hurdles in Europe

The challenges facing the Cybertruck extend beyond right-hand drive requirements. The vehicle has not received official release in the United Kingdom or the European Union, largely due to strict regulatory standards. European officials have not granted any type of regulatory approval for the Cybertruck, and it is widely believed that the model will not meet safety requirements.

Key concerns include regulations related to crumple zones, pedestrian safety, lighting, and weight classifications. The Cybertruck features sharp edges and a stiff stainless-steel body, which pose risks to vulnerable road users. The US Army Customs Agency previously noted that several specifications of the Cybertruck violate EU safety standards, particularly regarding the protection of pedestrians. While some customers have managed to secure single-vehicle approvals through extensive modifications, the vehicle remains largely unavailable in the region.
