The bald eagle, a powerful emblem of American strength and freedom, has officially been recognized as the national bird of the United States. On December 24, 2024, President Joe Biden signed a historic bill into law, formalizing the bald eagle’s status and correcting an oversight that spanned nearly 250 years.

The bald eagle, indigenous to North America, is now officially recognized as the national bird of the United States. Known for its majestic white head, yellow beak, and brown body, the bald eagle has been a long-standing symbol of independence, strength, and resilience.

When Did the Bald Eagle Become the National Bird?

Although commonly referred to as the national bird for centuries, the bald eagle was not officially designated as such until President Biden signed the legislation into law in December 2024. The bill, passed unanimously by Congress, amends Title 36 of the United States Code to solidify the bald eagle’s role as the nation’s avian representative.

    Why the Bald Eagle?

Since its adoption on the Great Seal of the United States in 1782, the bald eagle has been synonymous with American values like strength, courage, and freedom. The seal, a key symbol of the nation, features the bald eagle holding an olive branch in one talon, symbolizing peace, and arrows in the other, representing readiness for defense.

The eagle’s image has been widely used in military insignia, U.S. currency, government documents, and the presidential flag. Its prominence in American culture made it a natural choice as the national bird, even before its official designation.

What Was the National Bird Before the Bald Eagle?

Surprisingly, there was no legally designated national bird before this recent legislation. While the bald eagle had served as an unofficial symbol since 1782, it wasn’t officially recognized until President Biden’s signing of the bill in 2024.

Notably, Benjamin Franklin famously opposed the bald eagle’s selection as a national emblem, calling it a bird of “bad moral character.” Instead, Franklin advocated for the turkey, which he viewed as a more respectable and uniquely American bird. Despite Franklin’s objections, Congress chose the bald eagle for its associations with strength and independence.

Legislation to Protect the Bald Eagle

The bipartisan legislation that officially declared the bald eagle as the national bird was championed by lawmakers from Minnesota, a state known for its significant bald eagle population. The law celebrates the eagle’s role in American history and culture, as well as its recovery from near extinction.

“For nearly 250 years, we assumed the bald eagle was our national bird,” said Jack Davis, co-chair of the National Bird Initiative. “Now, we’ve made it official, and no bird is more deserving.”

Conservation Efforts: A Symbol of Resilience

The bald eagle’s journey to becoming the national bird is a testament to resilience. In the 20th century, its population suffered dramatically due to habitat destruction, hunting, and the use of the pesticide DDT, which caused eggshell thinning and reproductive failures. By 1963, only 417 nesting pairs remained in the wild.

Conservation efforts, including the 1972 ban on DDT and protections under the National Emblem Act of 1940, spurred a remarkable recovery. The bald eagle was removed from the endangered species list in 2007, with populations now estimated in the hundreds of thousands.

    Cultural and Spiritual Significance

Beyond its national importance, the bald eagle holds deep spiritual and cultural significance for Indigenous peoples across North America. It plays a central role in ceremonies, traditions, and art, symbolizing a divine connection and sacred reverence.

Communities across the U.S. celebrate the bald eagle through festivals and events that highlight its importance as a national and cultural symbol.

    Why the Bald Eagle Matters

The bald eagle is more than a bird; it’s a symbol that unites Americans. From its proud display on the Great Seal to its miraculous recovery from the brink of extinction, the bald eagle embodies the strength, freedom, and resilience that define the United States.

As President John F. Kennedy once remarked, the bald eagle’s “fierce beauty and proud independence aptly symbolize the strength and freedom of America.”

With President Biden’s signature, the bald eagle’s rightful place in history has been secured. This official recognition honors its legacy and ensures that future generations will continue to admire this iconic bird as a timeless symbol of the United States.
