Western Sydney Airport, also known as the Nancy-Bird Walton Airport, officially opened to passenger traffic on Sunday, October 25. The $14 billion project marks the first time a new airport has been constructed in Australia in over 50 years. The historic opening was marked by the departure of the first commercial passenger flight, operated by Jetstar.

    First Flights and Route Expansion

The inaugural passenger service took off at 11:00 AM local time. Jetstar flight JQ362, an Airbus A320, departed for the Gold Coast (OOL). This route sold out within an hour of becoming available to the public. Later in the evening, the airline will launch its second new service from the site, with flight JQ375 scheduled to depart for Melbourne Airport (MEL) at 6:00 PM.

Jetstar has outlined a four-route initial network from the new facility. Following the Gold Coast and Melbourne services, flights to Brisbane Airport (BNE) will begin on Tuesday, October 27. International service to Denpasar (DPS) is scheduled to start on March 15. The parent company, Qantas, will introduce QantasLink services to both Brisbane and Melbourne starting on March 28.

International operations will commence shortly after the domestic launch. Air New Zealand is set to become the first international carrier to operate to the airport. The airline will fly from Auckland Airport (AKL) on Monday, offering services up to three times a week. This expansion adds Western Sydney to Air New Zealand’s list of seven year-round Australian destinations, which includes Adelaide, Brisbane, Gold Coast, Melbourne, Perth, and Sydney.

    24/7 Operations and Infrastructure

Located approximately 44 kilometers from downtown Sydney, the new airport is designed to operate without a curfew. This allows for flight arrivals and departures 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This operational model contrasts sharply with Sydney’s current primary airport, which is restricted to daytime hours between 6:00 AM and 11:00 PM. The facility is situated just 20 minutes from Penrith and is currently connected to the city via bus services and new road infrastructure.

Simon Hickey, the airport’s Chief Executive Officer, described the opening as a historic milestone for the region. He noted that the facility was designed to accommodate future growth, with a physical footprint comparable to London Heathrow Airport. The terminal design features a unified approach to passenger processing. All check-in kiosks and bag drops are airline-agnostic, allowing passengers to use any station regardless of their carrier. Security screening and baggage claim areas can also be adjusted between domestic and international configurations based on daily flight schedules.

Freight operations have already been active since July 27. Qantas Freight, ASL Airlines, and National Jet Express currently operate cargo services to destinations including Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Melbourne, and Perth. The new airport is expected to see a direct train line open next year to improve connectivity with the city center.

Government officials, including New South Wales Premier Chris Minns, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, and Infrastructure Minister Catherine King, attended the opening ceremony. Other international carriers, including Fiji Airways, Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, and VietJet Air, have signaled their intent to operate services to the site in the coming months.
