Bandai Namco has announced that Ace Combat Zero will be released as a standalone application on Steam. This move resolves a long-standing complaint from players who were frustrated by the game’s previous integration into the much larger Ace Combat 8 launcher.

According to an update on the Steam store page, the developer is currently conducting final quality assurance and compatibility testing before the split goes live. The change means that owners of the pre-order bonus title will no longer need to download the 136 gigabytes of data required for Ace Combat 8 to access the 2006 classic.

    Resolving the Storage Bundle Issue

The original decision to bundle Ace Combat Zero with Ace Combat 8 was widely criticized. While Ace Combat 8 received high praise, with PC Gamer reviewers awarding it a 92 percent score, the inclusion of the older title as a mandatory download for the pre-order bonus caused significant friction. Many players found it unacceptable to install over 130 gigabytes of modern flight simulation data just to play a 3.2 gigabyte port of a PlayStation 2 game.

This bundling strategy reportedly contributed to the negative launch day reviews for Ace Combat 8. Players felt the requirement was disproportionate and inconvenient, especially for those with limited storage space on their solid-state drives. The separation of the two titles addresses this core grievance directly.

It is important to note that the standalone version will not be available for purchase. Ace Combat Zero remains a pre-order bonus for Ace Combat 8. Only users who purchased the newer game ahead of its launch will see the standalone entry in their Steam libraries. The fundamental ownership model has not changed, only the delivery method.

    New Features and Community Reaction

Beyond the relief of reduced storage requirements, the standalone release brings technical improvements. The most significant addition is support for Steam Cloud saves. Previously, progress in the bundled version was not synced across devices through Steam’s infrastructure. This feature allows players to continue their campaigns on different machines seamlessly.

The announcement has been well-received by the community. A Steam post regarding the update garnered nearly 400 comments in less than 24 hours. Players expressed satisfaction with the decision to separate the games. However, some users are still requesting additional features that were present in the original console release, such as Steam achievements. These requests have not yet been confirmed by the developer.

Bandai Namco has not provided a specific release date for the standalone application. The update is described as being in the final stages of testing, suggesting that the change will be implemented in the near future. Players can expect the option to download the game independently once the testing phase concludes.

This adjustment marks a practical solution to a distribution problem that had persisted since the launch of Ace Combat 8. By decoupling the legacy title from the modern sequel, the publisher has addressed the primary technical complaint while maintaining the pre-order incentive structure.
