Sam and Roger sat down for a meal in Glasgow with little expectation of agreement. Sam, an American compliance officer living in the UK, identifies with the Green Party. Roger, a retired accountant, has voted for Reform UK. Their political views on climate change, immigration, and energy policy are fundamentally opposed, yet they found themselves getting along remarkably well.

    Climate and Energy Disagreements

The conversation quickly turned to the climate crisis, where their differences were stark. Sam views the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions as the top priority. She advocates for cutting beef production and increasing plant-based consumption to mitigate environmental damage. Her approach focuses on immediate decarbonization and a shift away from fossil fuels.

Roger takes a different stance. He believes the push for net zero is happening too quickly and that electrification is premature. He argues for continuing to extract oil and gas from the North Sea until those resources are exhausted. He also suggests that population control is a necessary component of solving environmental issues. When Sam pointed out that drilling for more oil contradicts the goal of self-sufficient local food production due to climate impacts on agriculture, Roger maintained his position on utilizing domestic fossil fuel reserves.

    Immigration and Social Views

Discussions on immigration revealed another deep divide. Roger described himself as a xenophobe, framing his views as a natural human trait of risk awareness. He expressed concerns about terrorism and the role of foreigners in UK society. He also supported the idea of banning Muslims, citing fear-based rhetoric he had encountered.

Sam’s perspective was shaped by her experiences moving from a white, Christian, Republican area of Colorado to Glasgow. She noted that she had never met a Muslim person until she moved to the UK, which helped dispel the fears she had grown up with. She characterized Roger’s views as operating from a place of fear. Despite these tensions, Sam mentioned that she had practiced talking to people with far-right views due to her Trumpian family, which helped her remain calm during the discussion.

    Common Ground and Reflections

Despite the ideological clashes, both participants found the interaction amicable. Roger described Sam as charming and intelligent. He noted that humans naturally look for sameness before differences, which helped keep the conversation friendly. They agreed on many points, particularly regarding environmental protection, although they disagreed on the methods to achieve it.

Sam admitted to stereotyping Reform voters as less sophisticated or educated, but acknowledged that Roger, as a refined and well-spoken accountant, did not fit that mold. They discussed political funding, with Sam criticizing the lack of limits on donations in the US and Roger expressing concern over Nigel Farage’s undeclared £5m donation. The meal, which included dressed crab and fish and chips for Roger, and wild mushroom risotto for Sam, ended with both parties agreeing to keep in contact.
