Dr Allison Gardner, the Labour MP for Stoke-on-Trent South, is spearheading a parliamentary effort to secure an official medical definition for chronic urinary tract infections (UTIs). The campaign aims to address a significant gap in healthcare provision that has left millions of patients without clear diagnostic criteria or standardized treatment pathways.

Gardner, who has lived with recurrent infections for approximately a decade, describes the condition as causing “searing pain” that often leads to severe physical and emotional distress. Her advocacy is supported by a cross-party group of MPs who recognize the lack of consensus on what constitutes a chronic UTI as a major barrier to effective patient care.

    Gardner’s Personal Medical Journey

Gardner first experienced symptoms of the condition during perimenopause. She reported that the lack of a formal definition meant doctors were often unable to provide adequate relief, limiting antibiotic prescriptions and leaving patients to manage severe symptoms without clear guidance.

“You end up hunting for a decent length of antibiotic courses that will give you some relief,” Gardner said. She described the pain as comparable to “hot needles being inserted inside you,” a sensation that occurs every time she uses the toilet. The experience left her feeling dismissed by medical professionals, with some consultants suggesting she improve her hygiene or avoid sexual activity to prevent flare-ups.

The situation deteriorated to the point where Gardner considered selling her home to pay for private bladder removal surgery. She described feeling “gaslighted” by medics and being told her symptoms were related to anxiety or depression rather than a physical infection. It was only after seeking private care from Dr Cat Anderson, a GP specializing in challenging UTI cases, that she found relief. Anderson identified a link to menopause and prescribed Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT), which eliminated Gardner’s symptoms for two years.

    Expert Panel Targets 2027 Definition

Dr Anderson is now leading a panel of medical experts, including London-based urological surgeon Sachin Malde, to develop a formal definition of chronic UTIs. The group aims to differentiate the condition from other urinary disorders and establish a clear evidence base for diagnosis and treatment. They plan to present this definition to the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) in 2027.

Currently, NICE has recommended further research to develop a clear evidence base for chronic UTIs. NHS England confirmed that there is no single national dataset capturing chronic UTI cases as a distinct clinical diagnosis. This lack of data contributes to the estimated 1.2 million hospital bed days and over £604 million in costs attributed to UTIs in the UK during the 2023-24 period.

The All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on UTIs, co-chaired by Gardner and Liberal Democrat MP Luke Taylor, is lobbying for significant changes. Taylor expressed disappointment that the recent women’s health strategy announced by Health Secretary Wes Streeting did not mention chronic UTIs, despite Streeting’s acknowledgment of an “appalling culture of medical misogyny” in healthcare.

Beyond the definition, the APPG is calling for mandatory training for GPs on chronic UTIs and the introduction of a patient “passport.” This document would allow patients to share their medical history easily, preventing the need to repeatedly explain their condition to different healthcare providers. The group also emphasizes the need for increased research investment to improve care standards.

Dr Ron Daniels, founder of the UK Sepsis Trust, highlighted the severity of untreated infections, noting that up to 20% of sepsis cases originate from the urinary tract. Sepsis is a life-threatening reaction to infection that can lead to organ failure and death. The push for a chronic UTI definition is seen as a critical step in preventing such outcomes and improving the quality of life for patients who currently face significant barriers to effective treatment.
