United Airlines introduced a new digital tool on Thursday designed to help travelers determine if their upcoming flight will feature high-speed internet. The Starlink WiFi Tracker allows passengers to verify connectivity options before they board, addressing a common pain point for flyers who rely on reliable internet for work or entertainment.
The tracker is accessible through the United app and the airline’s website. Users simply enter their flight number and date to see if Starlink is installed on that specific aircraft. The tool also indicates if slower, alternative WiFi options are available if Starlink is not present. Passengers can check this information up to three days before departure.
United Airlines Starlink Fleet Expansion
According to the airline, the rollout of Starlink internet is now complete on 43 percent of its aircraft. This means that nearly half of United’s daily flights currently offer the service, but a significant portion still do not. The tracker provides additional context, showing fleet completion rates, total installations, and which hubs have the highest prevalence of the technology.

United aims to have Starlink installed on every aircraft in its fleet by the end of 2027. This ambitious timeline requires retrofitting more than 20 planes each week across 17 maintenance stations. If successful, United would become the first major US legacy carrier to equip its entire fleet with satellite-based internet, outpacing competitors like Delta Air Lines, which plans to begin its own rollout in 2028.
Andrew Nocella, United’s Executive Vice President and Chief Commercial Officer, stated that the tracker makes it easier for customers to identify flights with the service as the airline expands. He noted that customer feedback has been overwhelmingly positive and that the new tool supports the airline’s strategy to retain loyal flyers.
Speed and Customer Satisfaction
Starlink internet is significantly faster than traditional airplane WiFi. United claims the service reaches speeds of up to 400 Mbps, which is roughly 50 times faster than standard in-flight connectivity. This speed allows passengers to stream movies, video call, or upload large files without interruption.

The airline reports that customer satisfaction scores are twice as high when Starlink is available. To capitalize on this preference, United has introduced a “Switch to Better Wi-Fi” status match offer. This promotion allows elite members of Delta Air Lines and American Airlines to match their status with United Premier status if they apply before October 22.
The status match is activated within 90 days and provides benefits such as priority boarding and free checked bags on United and United Express flights. This move highlights the airline’s strategy to use superior internet connectivity as a key differentiator in the competitive domestic travel market.
Passengers who do not have Starlink on their flight can still access WiFi, but it will be slower and may require a purchase. The new tracker ensures that travelers are not surprised by connectivity limitations after they have already boarded. United also sends pre-flight emails and text notifications to inform passengers about the internet options available on their specific route.

The introduction of the tracker coincides with a period of rapid technological change in the aviation industry. As more airlines adopt satellite internet, the gap between traditional and modern connectivity options continues to widen. United’s aggressive timeline suggests it views high-speed internet as a critical component of the passenger experience.
For now, the tool serves as a temporary utility. Once the fleet is fully equipped, the need to check for Starlink availability will disappear. Until then, it provides a clear and immediate way for travelers to plan their in-flight activities.
