    What Are Drones?

Drones, also known as unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), are aircraft without a human pilot onboard. They can be used for various purposes, including photography, delivery, surveillance, and military operations. While most drones are small and operated by hobbyists or businesses, the larger drones spotted in New Jersey suggest they may belong to commercial or military entities.

What Are the Drones Over New Jersey?

The drones spotted in New Jersey are larger than typical hobbyist drones, with some reported to be as large as six feet in diameter. According to Assemblywoman Dawn Fantasia post on X, these drones sometimes fly with their lights off, making them harder to track. They’ve been seen hovering over sensitive locations like the Picatinny Arsenal, a military research facility, and President-elect Donald Trump’s golf course in Bedminster. Sightings have also extended to neighboring Pennsylvania, including Philadelphia.

While drones are legal for recreational and commercial use in New Jersey, they must adhere to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations, including flight restrictions and operator certification. The unusual size and behavior of these drones suggest they’re not being operated by typical hobbyists.

Why Are Drones Flying Over New Jersey? New Jersey Drones Explained

Authorities remain uncertain about the purpose of these drones. Theories range from commercial or military testing to more nefarious possibilities. Professor Pramod Abichandani from NJIT suggests these could be part of a sophisticated swarm experiment, likely conducted by defense contractors.

Despite widespread speculation, including concerns about criminal activity or foreign surveillance, officials like FBI spokesperson Amy Thoreson emphasize the need for patience. “We are doing all we can to figure it out,” Thoreson stated.

Can You Shoot Down a Drone Over Your Property?

The short answer is no. The FAA strictly prohibits shooting at any aircraft, including drones. Doing so is a federal offense and could result in significant legal and civil consequences.

If you suspect a drone is invading your privacy, experts recommend contacting local law enforcement or filing a complaint with the FAA. While some companies offer professional drone removal services using nets or signal jamming, these options can be costly.

    Public Concerns and Official Responses

Residents and lawmakers alike are frustrated by the lack of transparency. Senator Cory Booker called for more clarity to prevent misinformation and public anxiety. The Coast Guard and FBI are working to analyze footage and data, urging anyone with information to share it.

Meanwhile, local drone experts caution against jumping to conclusions. “The simplest explanation is likely the correct one,” says Abichandani, dismissing theories of espionage or alien involvement.

What Should You Do If You Spot a Drone?

If you see a drone that appears suspicious:

    1. Document the Sightings: Take photos or videos.
    2. Report It: Call the FBI tip line at 1-800-CALL-FBI or submit a tip online.
    3. Stay Informed: Keep an eye on updates from local authorities and agencies.

The mysterious “drones over New Jersey“ have sparked widespread interest and concern. While the investigations continue, officials stress that there is no immediate threat to public safety. As drone technology becomes more accessible, understanding and adapting to these advancements will remain crucial for both government agencies and the public.
