A new stage production in Belfast is using the world of boxing to examine the complex issues surrounding men’s mental health and the loss of identity that often follows retirement from sport. The Corner Man follows a fighter who must confront life outside the ring after spending decades dedicated to the sport.

Writer and producer Cathal J Ferris developed the concept after reflecting on his own experiences in the gym and conversations with other athletes. He wanted to understand what happens when the routine and structure that define an athlete’s life suddenly disappear.

“What is a boxer after he retires really played on my mind,” Ferris said. He noted that the questions of identity and purpose extend beyond the sporting world, affecting anyone who leaves a long-term career or passion behind.

The Loss of Structure and Identity

The narrative centers on Liam Casey, a character who has boxed since he was nine years old. When an injury forces him to stop, he loses not just the sport, but the daily routine that provided him with direction and purpose. Ferris drew parallels to people who leave stable jobs after many years, often finding themselves unsure of their next steps.

Ferris, who grew up performing in amateur theatre in Belfast and Lisburn before studying drama in London, returned to his hometown to tell stories rooted in his own background. He highlighted the strong boxing community in Belfast as a key influence on the story’s authenticity.

The play also addresses the cultural tendency among men to suppress their emotions. Ferris referenced the old adage to “say nothing,” acknowledging the difficulty many men face in discussing their struggles. He emphasized that the production aims to encourage open dialogue.

“It is healthy to talk, so definitely if you’re a man and you’re struggling, at least speak to somebody,” Ferris said. He hopes the play will help normalize these conversations and reduce the stigma around seeking help.

    Support Networks and Male Friendship

Director Emma Copeland immersed herself in the world of boxing to ensure the production was accurate. She attended classes, watched films, and read autobiographies to understand the physical and emotional demands of the sport. For Copeland, the core message of the play is the importance of men supporting each other.

“The angle that I see is that men supporting men, and helping and talking and encouraging support with each other,” Copeland said. She noted that the play encourages men to open up rather than isolating themselves in their feelings.

Actor Gary Trainor, who plays gym owner Marty and several other roles, described the story as universal. He argued that the shock of losing a central part of one’s life can happen in many circumstances, not just in sports. Trainor hopes the play will prompt men to reflect on their own emotional processing and communication with friends.

The production aims to blend heart and humor to make its message accessible. By focusing on the bonds between men in the gym, The Corner Man offers a nuanced look at how friendship and shared experience can provide a safety net during times of crisis.

The play is currently being prepared for performance in Belfast, with the creative team hoping to reach audiences who may not typically engage with theatre focused on mental health topics.
