SpaceX has moved closer to its goal of becoming a major mobile carrier by agreeing to acquire the entire nationwide spectrum portfolio of Grain Management. The deal involves up to 14 megahertz of paired low-band spectrum in the 800 MHz band. This acquisition is currently pending approval from the Federal Communications Commission (FCC).
The company stated that access to this specific frequency range addresses a critical technical gap. While SpaceX has previously secured spectrum licenses from EchoStar, the new low-band assets are essential for enabling Starlink Mobile signals to penetrate walls and other physical obstacles. This capability is necessary to provide reliable service inside buildings, a common limitation for satellite-based connectivity.

Starlink Spectrum Expansion
SpaceX described the acquisition as a foundational element for its broader telecommunications ambitions. The company noted that most existing mobile devices already support the 800 MHz band. This compatibility allows SpaceX to potentially reach millions of customers without requiring them to purchase new hardware. The move positions Starlink as a direct alternative to established terrestrial wireless providers.
According to the company, the combination of this new spectrum and its second-generation satellite constellation will allow Starlink Mobile to deploy both satellite and terrestrial spectrum. This dual approach aims to deliver reliable indoor service while maintaining broadband internet access in remote areas where traditional infrastructure is scarce.

Gen2 Satellite Bandwidth
The spectrum acquisition complements recent regulatory approvals for SpaceX’s next-generation satellite network. The FCC has authorized the deployment of 15,000 Starlink Mobile Gen2 satellites optimized for the 2 GHz spectrum. SpaceX claims these satellites will deliver more than 100 times the bandwidth of its current generation.

This significant increase in capacity is intended to support high-speed internet services across a wider range of global regions. The combination of low-band terrestrial spectrum and high-capacity satellite links forms the technical backbone of SpaceX’s strategy to operate as a full-service mobile network operator rather than solely a satellite internet provider.
