Valve has released the full CAD files for the Steam Frame, providing modders with the technical resources needed to create custom components for the VR headset. The release includes detailed files for the core module, controllers, head strap, battery housing, facial interface, and the light blocker, which sits between the bridge of the nose and the headset.
Steam Frame CAD files and expansion port
The documentation accompanying the release explains how to interface with the expansion port, also referred to as the auxiliary port. This port is located just in front of the user’s nose and provides a Gen4 PCIe lane alongside power and camera functionality. This setup allows users to add powered accessories to the headset.
PC Gamer journalist Jacob Bickley has been testing the Arcturus Vision RGB camera with the Steam Frame for a couple of weeks. He described the camera as a significant upgrade for the headset. The availability of the expansion port details in the CAD release suggests that third-party developers could create a wider range of accessories for the device.
Upgraded hardware coming soon
Valve confirmed that it is currently working on an upgraded head strap for the Steam Frame. This new version will feature interchangeable batteries and off-ear speakers. The company stated that this upgraded hardware is coming soon. The release of the current CAD files may pave the way for more third-party options in the future, as users now have the blueprints to design their own replacements for the light blocker, head strap, and other components.
This move completes a sweep of CAD file releases for Valve’s recent products. The company has previously made its CAD files available for the Steam Deck, Steam Machine, and Steam Controller. Valve has stated that this approach to sharing design files is how hardware development should be handled.
