Trump Calls for Zelenskyy’s Removal Amid Diesel Deal with Russia

United States President Donald Trump has publicly called for the removal of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, marking the latest escalation in a relationship defined by public rebukes and strategic disagreements. The comments came on Saturday as the White House announced a new agreement to purchase diesel fuel from Russia, a move that directly contradicts previous US policy and has drawn sharp criticism from Kyiv.

Speaking to reporters at the White House, Trump blamed Zelenskyy for global diesel shortages, arguing that Ukrainian strikes on Russian refineries were harming American farmers and ranchers. “I think it’s time for Ukraine to get a new president,” Trump said. He added that the Ukrainian leader was intentionally creating problems for US energy supplies despite Russia being a major global supplier.

The US president struck a deal with Vladimir Putin on Friday to buy diesel from Russia. This agreement represents a significant shift from years of Washington pressuring Moscow over its invasion of Ukraine. Trump had previously urged Zelenskyy to halt attacks on Russian energy facilities, telling reporters, “He better damn well stop.”

Recent Escalations and the Oval Office Clash

The current dispute follows a series of heated exchanges between the two leaders over the past year. In February 2025, Trump and Vice President JD Vance engaged in a shouting match with Zelenskyy during a meeting at the White House. The discussion focused on rare earth mineral agreements and security assurances. Trump warned that the US would withdraw support if a peace deal was not reached, accusing Zelenskyy of disrespecting the United States.

Just days before that meeting, Trump had labeled Zelenskyy a “dictator without elections” on his social media platform. He accused the Ukrainian leader of prolonging the conflict to maintain US military aid. Speaking at an investment summit in Miami, Trump stated that Zelenskyy had done a “terrible job” and that millions of people had died unnecessarily.

Tensions continued into April 2025. Trump criticized Zelenskyy for refusing to cede occupied Crimea to Russia in potential peace talks. Trump claimed Zelenskyy’s refusal was “harmful to the Peace Negotiations with Russia” and suggested the Ukrainian leader was stoking tension by boasting about not recognizing Russian annexation of the peninsula.

    Historical Context of US-Ukraine Relations

Zelenskyy pushed back against Trump’s latest demands on Sunday. He wrote on X that Ukraine would stop striking Russian oil refineries only if Russia stopped attacking Ukrainian energy infrastructure. He argued that every billion dollars Russia earns from exports funds weapons and drone upgrades, making a ceasefire impossible while Moscow retains its military capacity.

The current friction echoes events from Trump’s first term. In July 2019, Trump pressured Zelenskyy to investigate political rival Joe Biden. During that period, the Trump administration withheld nearly $400 million in congressionally approved security assistance, leading to speculation that the funds were being used as leverage for political favors.

During the 2024 campaign, Trump repeatedly criticized Zelenskyy for not ending the war quickly. He argued that even a unfavorable deal involving territorial concessions would be better than continued fighting. Despite these public attacks, the two leaders met privately at the Vatican in April 2025 during Pope Francis’s funeral, though no joint statements were issued.

As the November midterm elections approach, the Republican Party faces pressure from voters concerned about rising fuel costs. Trump’s comments appear aimed at shifting blame for economic pressures onto Kyiv. The diesel deal with Russia remains a controversial pivot in US foreign policy, with critics arguing it legitimizes Moscow’s energy sector while Ukraine continues to defend its sovereignty.
