A Delta Air Lines passenger is speaking out after a gate agent refused to allow her breast pump onboard as a carry-on item. The incident occurred when the agent insisted the device could only be brought aboard if the passenger was traveling with an infant. This decision directly contradicted the airline’s published guidelines, which explicitly permit breast pumps as an additional free carry-on item regardless of whether a child is present.

Jordon Lally documented the confrontation in a video posted to TikTok. In the clip, a Delta gate agent tells Lally that she cannot bring the pump because she is not accompanied by a baby. Lally responded by showing the agent screenshots of Delta’s official website, which clearly state that passengers may bring a breast pump and associated cooler bag as an extra item. The agent dismissed the screenshots, claiming they were “AI overviews” and not the actual policy.

Delta Breast Pump Policy Contradicted at Gate

Delta’s website states that the airline allows select children and infant items to make traveling with kids easier. According to the carrier, passengers can bring a booster seat, other infant seat, or a breast pump with a cooler bag in addition to their standard one-bag carry-on allowance. The policy notes that these items must meet standard carry-on size restrictions. Lally stated that her pump bag complied with these size limits.

The agent also told Lally she had “too many bags” and could not bring an additional item, regardless of its classification. Lally argued that the pump should be treated as a medical device. She later shared a screenshot from Delta’s site that explicitly says passengers do not need to have their baby with them to bring a breast pump and cooler bag onboard.

The video gained significant attention, attracting nearly three million views within 24 hours. Lally used the platform to call for accountability, stating that the women at the gate needed to be held responsible for the interaction. She highlighted the agent’s refusal to accept the website information as a primary issue.

    Industry Standards and Federal Regulations

There is no federal rule requiring airlines to allow breast pumps outside of standard carry-on limits. Each airline sets its own policy regarding these items. Most major US carriers follow a similar approach to Delta. Southwest Airlines states that breast pumps do not count toward its carry-on limit. American Airlines also excludes them from the standard allowance.

The US Food and Drug Administration classifies breast pumps as medical devices. The Transportation Security Administration permits breast milk in carry-on bags in quantities exceeding the usual 100 ml limit. The agency also allows ice packs and other cooling accessories for breast milk.

This is not the first time Delta has faced criticism for its handling of breast pumps at boarding gates. In March, another TikTok user, Amanda, posted a complaint about a similar incident in Chicago. She reported that a Delta employee questioned whether she needed a breast pump and stated it did not count as a medical device. Amanda was also told to consolidate her belongings before boarding.

Lally eventually agreed to check the bag containing the pump so she could catch her flight. The incident highlights the gap between published airline policies and the enforcement actions taken by individual gate agents. Passengers continue to navigate these inconsistencies while trying to manage travel logistics with medical equipment.
