The Social Reckoning opened to a disappointing $5.5 million at the domestic box office, a figure that trails even the conservative projections set by distributor Sony Pictures. The $30 million budgeted feature, which serves as a follow-up to the 2010 hit The Social Network, has struggled to generate momentum in a crowded theatrical market. Industry analysts suggest the film’s performance signals a shift in audience interest regarding stories about the technology sector.

    Box Office Performance and Cast

Jeremy Strong stars as the chief executive officer in the film, replacing Jesse Eisenberg, who portrayed Mark Zuckerberg in the original 2010 drama. The plot follows a Facebook employee, played by Mikey Madison, who allies with a journalist portrayed by Jeremy Allen White to uncover hidden truths within the company. Despite the star power and the pedigree of screenwriter Aaron Sorkin, the film failed to replicate the commercial success of its predecessor, which grossed $224 million globally.

Paul Dergarabedian of Rentrak noted that the cultural context for such stories has changed significantly since 2010. He explained that Facebook was once viewed as a more exciting subject, whereas it is now considered a standard utility. This shift, combined with mixed critical reviews, has created headwinds for the film. The Social Reckoning currently holds a 55 percent approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, indicating a divided reception among critics.

    Broader Trends in Tech Cinema

The underperformance of The Social Reckoning has sparked debate about the future of technology-themed movies. David A. Gross, who runs the box office newsletter FranchiseRe, stated that the story lost its edge over the last 16 years. He argued that public sentiment has soured regarding corporate misbehavior, making these narratives less cinematic and relatable for modern audiences. The current cultural moment, marked by fears about artificial intelligence and the political influence of tech billionaires, may not align with the escapist entertainment viewers seek.

Other tech-focused projects are entering the market with different approaches. The documentary Musk, directed by Alex Gibney, opened on four screens and earned $69,321, achieving the second-best average per screen of the weekend. The nearly four-hour film focuses on Elon Musk and has received positive reviews. Additionally, the documentary You Can See Everything, which examines the rise and fall of Elizabeth Holmes, is set to release next weekend. Neon has scheduled the release of Artificial, a film starring Andrew Garfield as OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, for December after Amazon dropped the project earlier in the year.

Unlike The Social Reckoning, the documentaries and Artificial have garnered stellar reviews. Their box office success may depend on building awards buzz, which could help them overcome the challenges faced by Sorkin’s film. Allison de Fren, a media arts professor at Occidental College, observed that the rich and powerful remain irresistible subjects for media. She noted that while figures like Musk and Zuckerberg may not be charismatic, their invisible influence over daily life makes them compelling topics for filmmakers.

The intersection of Hollywood and Silicon Valley continues to deepen. Laurene Powell Jobs recently joined the board of Skydance Corporation, founded by David Ellison, the son of Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison. This move highlights the increasing convergence of funding and influence between the two industries. Andrew Utterson, a screen studies professor at Ithaca College, emphasized the need for filmmakers to tell important tech stories without undue influence from powerful corporate entities.

Experts suggest that the soft turnout for The Social Reckoning might reflect its specific focus on past controversies rather than a rejection of all tech stories. Gabriel Rossman, an economic sociology professor at UCLA, pointed out that concerns about misinformation feel like yesterday’s news. He suggested that audiences are more interested in artificial intelligence and that Artificial could emerge as a breakout hit due to its focus on Sam Altman, who is considered one of the most significant figures in the industry today.
