Alberta voters have decisively rejected a push for separation from Canada in a referendum, with Prime Minister Mark Carney calling the result a great outcome for national unity. Preliminary data from Elections Alberta indicates that more than two-thirds of residents chose to remain part of the federation, dealing a significant blow to the separatist movement that had gained traction over the past year.

Carney Celebrates Unity Amid Trade Tensions

Speaking to reporters as he entered a cabinet meeting on Tuesday, Carney expressed relief at the outcome. He described the vote as a “great result” for the country and stated he was thrilled that Albertans had chosen unity. The Prime Minister emphasized the need for a united front, particularly as Canada navigates an ongoing trade dispute with the United States.

“They have chosen to build together,” Carney said. “They have chosen to continue to take care of each other, to move forward, to move forward together, with purpose, high ambition.”

Carney noted that he had spoken with Alberta Premier Danielle Smith earlier that day. The two discussed moving forward in a spirit of cooperative federalism, addressing shared priorities such as immigration and infrastructure. This collaboration follows a year of joint efforts, including their push for a new oil pipeline to the Pacific coast.

    Defiance from Separatist Leaders

Despite the clear defeat, separatist leaders vowed that their movement would not end. Jeffrey Rath, a Calgary-based lawyer and separatist organizer, struck a defiant tone at a watch party in Edmonton where the mood soured as projections favored the “remain” side. Rath told the BBC that the vote was merely a “first step” and that the movement would continue to push for independence.

“Why not?” Rath said when asked if his group would keep holding votes until they achieved their goal. He insisted that the economic and mathematical arguments for separation remained valid. Separatists plan to challenge Smith’s leadership within the United Conservative Party, hoping to install a premier more sympathetic to their cause.

Premier Smith, who opposed the separatist push but acknowledged the public demand for a vote, welcomed the result. She stated that Albertans had voted for a stronger province within a united Canada. Smith pledged to address the province later on Tuesday regarding the path forward, noting that a binding referendum on separation would not be held while she remains in power.

    Broader Political Implications

The referendum was triggered by a grassroots petition that gathered approximately 300,000 signatures. Although a judge initially blocked the vote for failing to consult Indigenous First Nations, Smith proceeded with the ballot. An opposing petition with over 400,000 signatures also circulated.

The vote included nine other non-binding questions, five of which focused on immigration. Early results suggest strong support for proposals giving the province greater control over immigration levels. Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe expressed satisfaction with the unity vote but noted that Western Canada still faces challenges in its relationship with Ottawa.

Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre took to social media to declare that “the promise of Canada is worth fighting for.” He shifted the focus to domestic issues, calling for action on affordable housing, food costs, and border security. This marks the first time a Canadian province has weighed separation since Quebec held its referendums in 1980 and 1995.
