Meta’s personal artificial intelligence assistant, Muse, has surpassed 10 million downloads in the United States and Canada within its first 35 days of availability. The milestone, reported by digital market insights platform Sensor Tower on Monday, marks the fastest launch trajectory for a major AI application to date.
Outpacing Industry Giants in Early Adoption
According to Sensor Tower Vice President of Insights Seema M. Shah, Muse’s rapid uptake significantly exceeds the early performance of its primary competitors. OpenAI’s ChatGPT, Anthropic’s Claude, and xAI’s Grok each required more than 100 days to reach the same 10 million download threshold.
Shah noted the distinction in launch scope when speaking to Bloomberg. While ChatGPT, Claude, and Grok were released globally, Muse is currently available exclusively in the US and Canada. This geographic limitation did not hinder its initial velocity.
“Now, ChatGPT was when AI was more nascent and less in the zeitgeist, but still, it just shows how fast the adoption has been,” Shah said. She added that the data reflects a broader shift in user behavior toward personal agents rather than simple chat interfaces. “There’s been a huge interest in Muse and these personal agents versus the direct chatbots.”
Retention Rates and Active User Metrics
Beyond initial downloads, early retention figures for Muse appear strong compared to previous market entrants. Sensor Tower data indicates that 23 percent of US users returned to the app after 14 days. This retention rate exceeds the 17 percent figure recorded by Anthropic’s Claude during its launch period.
However, the absolute number of active users remains smaller than established leaders. Shah pointed out that Muse currently has approximately 2 million active users in the US. In contrast, ChatGPT has reached 55 million active users. This gap highlights the difference between initial curiosity and sustained daily engagement.
“So, [Muse] is being retained at a higher rate than the other AI apps, but the question is going to be, going forward, ‘How are the active users? What is the engagement level?’” Shah said. “It’s still pretty early to say.”
Market Reaction and Financial Projections
Meta launched Muse on September 8, positioning it as a simple, “built for everyone” personal AI agent. The app’s performance surprised many industry observers. PYMNTS reported on September 23 that the rapid ascent to the top of the charts caught Silicon Valley and Wall Street off guard, as Meta’s previous AI applications had never achieved such high rankings.
Just 10 days after launch, Muse claimed the number one spot on Apple’s App Store, displacing ChatGPT. The app’s success has also drawn financial attention. Reuters reported on October 6 that a Citi analysis suggested Muse could serve as a primary gateway to internet services. The bank projected that this role could generate more than $27 billion in revenue by 2030.
The current data focuses on download volume and short-term retention. Long-term engagement metrics will determine whether Muse can maintain its momentum against entrenched competitors like ChatGPT. Sensor Tower continues to track these figures as the app expands its feature set and user base.
